Osier posts second-straight shutout with six saves; Foley nets lone goal

EASTON, Mass. (October 16, 2010) – Stonehill College, ranked seventh in this week's Kookaburra/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II poll, ran its winning streak to six games with a key 1-0 victory over Adelphi University in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action at W.B. Mason Stadium this afternoon.

Senior goalkeeper Courtney Osier (South Dennis, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth) posted her second-straight shutout of the week for Stonehill as she made six saves. It marks her fourth shutout of the season and 15th in her career. Sophomore Kristine Puzio (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) finished with seven stops in the cage for Adelphi, which also got three defensive saves on the afternoon. Stonehill posted an 18-10 advantage in shots for the day and a 10-6 break on penalty corners.

Senior back Courtney Foley (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield Memorial) scored the lone goal of the game and helped lead the Stonehill defensive effort. Classmate Lauren Gifford (Goffstown, N.H./Goffstown) aided in the defensive showing and assisted on the lone goal.

After a scoreless first half with a combined eight shots (6-2 Stonehill), Stonehill began to pile up the shots in the second half and was rewarded with a series of penalty corners just past the 51-minute mark. Gifford and Foley worked a give-and-go off a corner from senior Lindsey Pinkham (Skowhegan, Maine/Skowhegan Area) and Gifford slipped a pass through two Adelphi defenders before Foley blasted in her third goal of the season from the left side at 51:17.

Osier did the rest, making four saves over the final ten minutes of the contest to preserve the win. Stonehill nearly doubled their lead at 55:43, but junior Kathryn Nelson's (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) shot was blocked away from an open net by Adelphi freshman Jamie Ackerman (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East).

Stonehill (9-4, 5-0 NE-10) is right back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Franklin Pierce University for an NE-10 clash at 7 p.m. Adelphi (7-5, 2-1 NE-10) is off until next Saturday when it visits Franklin Pierce at 3 p.m.
