Saint Anselm Game Notes

The Game: Something’s gotta give this afternoon as Stonehill College and Saint Anselm College meet for the “Battle for the Ol’ Bronze Hawk” both in search of their first wins of the 2016 season. The Skyhawks are coming off a 51-20 setback to LIU Post last Saturday night, while the Hawks were handed a 52-21 loss at New Haven.

Battle for the Ol’ Bronze Hawk: Stonehill holds an 11-0 all-time record in the “Battle for the Ol’ Bronze Hawk” after last season’s 35-24 victory over Saint Anselm. The “Ol’ Bronze Hawk” is given to the winner of the annual football matchup between the Skyhawks and Hawks and was unveiled in 2006. Stonehill has held possession of the valued hardware each of the ten years so far, outscoring Saint Anselm 386-173 in that time. A little repair work had to be done to the Bronze Hawk in 2009 as it had a wing clipped while being loaded into the team’s equipment van after Stonehill’s 35-0 win in Manchester, in 2008. Stonehill has won 12-straight meetings overall between the two and is now 13-5 all-time against the Hawks.

Coach to Cure MD: This weekend is Coach to Cure Week in college football and the coaching staffs of both teams this afternoon are wearing armbands in recognition of the event. Coach To Cure MD is a partnership between the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), a professional organization for over 10,000 college football coaches and staff, and Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD), the largest national charity devoted exclusively to Duchenne muscular dystrophy. In 2008 the AFCA adopted PPMD’s Coach To Cure MD program as one of their charity efforts. One reason the AFCA was drawn to Coach To Cure MD was because of the unique parallels between Duchenne, a disorder which robs young men of precious muscle strength and college football, a game where young men are at the peak of their muscle strength. 30 for 30: Junior quarterback Matt Foltz (Mount Joy, Pa.) enters today’s game just one touchdown pass shy of becoming just the fifth quarterback in program history to pass for 30-plus career touchdowns after tossing his 29th career scoring pass on Saturday night.

Long Weekend Drives: Nine of Stonehill’s 12 scoring drives this season have consumed ten plays or more, with three of those possessions accumulating 80-plus yards, including a 91-yard touchdown drive at Southern Connecticut State in week two.

Iron Man: Senior defensive end Andrew Kibarian (Lynnfield, Mass.) has started 34 straight games on the Stonehill defensive line heading into today’s game. He has started 34 of his 36 games played over his career.

Getting Good Reception: Freshman Andrew Jamiel (West Yarmouth, Mass.) has posted double-digit reception totals each of the last two weeks, including a program-record 16 at Southern Connecticut State in week two. He broke the previous single-game mark of 14 receptions by John Gomes ‘13 against American International in 2012. Jamiel ranks second both nationally and in the NE-10 with his 10.0 receptions per game average - behind only Saint Anselm senior Zach Bartak.

With Purpose: Sophomore running back Mike Cordova (Monroe, N.J.) and freshman flanker Andrew Jamiel (West Yarmouth, Mass.) rank No. 1 and 2 in the Northeast-10, respectively, for all-purpose yards per game. Cordova leads the NE-10 and ranks 15th nationally with his 170 all-purpose yards per game, while Jamiel is right behind him in second in the league (32nd nationally) with 152.3 yards per game. Jamiel posted Stonehill’s first 200-yard all-purpose game since Nate Robitaille ‘15 had 242 all-purpose yards on October 25, 2014, also against Southern Connecticut, in week two, finishing with 210.

You Complete Me: Junior Matt Foltz (Mount Joy, Pa.) ranks second among Northeast-10 quarterbacks behind just Saint Anselm’s Yianni Gavalas (73) with his 70 completions through the first three weeks. Foltz is also third in the NE-10 for completion percentage at 61.4%.

Skyhawks Going National Again: Tickets for Stonehill’s October 15 home game against the University of New Haven, which will be broadcast live on ESPN, WatchESPN, are on sale tonight until halftime as well as the Skyhawks October 1 game here at W.B. Mason Stadium against Merrimack. For the second time in four years Stonehill’s home matchup with New Haven is receiving a national broadcast, after its 2012 contest that was named the Northeast-10 Game of the Year by D2Football.com was televised on CBS Sports Network. This year’s game on ESPN3, WatchESPN is scheduled for Saturday, October 15, from W.B. Mason Stadium at 6 p.m. The Stonehill/New Haven game is part of the NCAA Division II Football Showcase, in which 22 regular season games will be carried by ESPN3, WatchESPN and American Sports Network.

Leaders of the Pack: The 2016-17 academic year marks the eighth-straight year, Stonehill College is partnering with Pack Network to provide live “Packcasts” of Skyhawks athletics. However, it marks the first time the webcasts are available free of charge. Stonehill will webcast all home games for football, field hockey, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball and women’s lacrosse this season, as well as one men’s and one women’s soccer match this fall. Games can also be viewed on your iPad or iPhone.
