Freehold, N.J., junior cornerback leads Skyhawks to big win at New Haven
EASTON, Mass. (October 21, 2013) – Stonehill College junior cornerback Sterry Codrington (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Boro) has been named the Northeast-10 Conference's Defensive Player of the Week for football by the league office this afternoon. It marks the second-straight week and fifth time in seven weeks this season overall that a Skyhawks defensive player has collected the award, with junior linebacker Brian Harrington (Rockland, Mass./Rockland) receiving the honors four times this fall.
Codrington earns the weekly honors for the first time in his career after spearheading a Stonehill defensive effort in Saturday's big 29-26 victory at the University of New Haven. He matched his career high with ten tackles (seven solo) to go with a record two blocked kicks, a sack for a loss of 12 yards and a pass breakup. Codrington blocked a New Haven field goal attempt in the second quarter and an extra point in the third to become the first player in Stonehill history to block two kicks in a single game and move within one block of the single-season record of three by Jabari Prince in 2006. Codrington's sack came on a fake field goal attempt by the Chargers in the fourth quarter to set up the Skyhawks game winning touchdown drive.
Codrington ranks second on the Stonehill defense this season with 50 tackles (10th NE-10), with 36 solo (6th), including a team-leading 5.5 for a loss of 27 yards, 1.0 sacks for a loss of 12, a team-high five pass breakups (6th), an interception, forced fumble, two fumble recoveries (2nd) and his Conference-leading two blocked kicks. Codrington also posted a career-high ten stops (career-best eight solo) in the Skyhawks 52-24 win over Saint Anselm College in week two, when he also had a career-best 3.5 tackles for a loss of 13 yards, a forced fumble, fumble recovery and three breakups.
Codrington has played 25 games over his career at Stonehill and posted 88 tackles (61 solo), including 6.5 for a loss of 36 yards, 2.0 sacks for a loss of 21 yards, two interceptions, ten breakups, a forced fumble, two fumble recoveries and two blocked kicks. He was also named to the NoontimeSports.com New England Football Weekly honor roll for the second time this season for his efforts on Saturday.
Stonehill (5-2, 5-1 NE-10), among teams receiving votes in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II poll for the second-straight week and ranked sixth in this week's Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC)/Lambert Meadowlands Division II poll, returns home on Saturday to host LIU Post for another big NE-10 clash at W.B. Mason Stadium at noon. The Skyhawks are off to their best start since 1996 when the program won eight of its first nine games before finishing 8-2.
