Meyer breaks career passing yardage record, passes for five TDs and rushes for another as offense gains 593 yards

EASTON, Mass. (September 14, 2013) – The Ol' Bronze Hawk will remain in Easton for an eighth-straight year as Stonehill College racked up nearly 600 yards of total offense to claim a 52-24 triumph over Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 Conference football action at Timothy J. Coughlin Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium tonight.

Senior quarterback Logan Meyer (Ventura, Calif./Saint Bonaventure) surpassed Stonehill Hall of Famer Tony Dello Iocono, '95, atop the program's career passing yardage list as his 332 yards on 18-for-33 passing give him 5,138 yards over his career, topping the previous mark of 4,895. Meyer finished with five touchdown passes and rushed for a sixth without an interception to engineer the Skyhawks offense which racked up a W.B. Mason Stadium record 593 yards of total offense, with 234 rushing and 359 through the air, and their highest point total since a 56-7 victory over Saint Anselm on October 6, 2007.

Meyer's yardage total tonight is the third-highest all-time at Stonehill as he holds the top four passing yardage totals in program history. His five touchdown passes is just one shy of the Skyhawks single-game record of which Meyer holds a share of and moves him into second place all-time with 42 career scoring passes – just four shy of Dello Iacono's record of 46.

Senior running back Jamal Johnson (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) rushed the ball 27 times for a career-high 170 yards and a 66-yard touchdown run that capped the scoring on the night. Junior Nate Robitaille (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) had a career-high ten receptions for a career-best 157 yards and a touchdown, while sophomore Corey White (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) finished with five receptions for a career-high 107 yards and three touchdowns. Junior Zaire Reiph (Norwalk, Conn./Saint Luke's School) matched Robitaille for the team lead with 171 all-purpose yards by catching the ball twice for 53 yards and a touchdown to go with 118 yards on four kickoff returns.

Junior Sterry Codrington (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Boro) paced the Stonehill defense, which forced three turnovers, with a career-high ten tackles (eight solo), including 3.5 for a loss of 13 yards, a forced fumble and three pass breakups. Senior Tim Bennett (Fillmore, Calif./Saint Bonaventure) also posted ten stops (eight solo), while junior Brian Harrington (Rockland, Mass./Rockland) reached double-figures in tackles for the second-straight week with ten stops (six solo), including 1.0 sacks for a loss of six.

Sophomore Andrew Murphy (Franklin, Mass.) completed 27-of-45 passes for 280 yards and a touchdown, with two interceptions, for Saint Anselm, adding 11 yards on nine carries and a touchdown. Junior Justin Bernard (Cambridge, Mass.) caught eight passes for 85 yards, while senior Keith Charles (Laurel, Md.) ran the ball 18 times for 95 yards and a score.

Junior Isaac Jorgensen (Eldersburg, Md.) paced the defense with nine tackles (seven solo) and a pass breakup. Senior Lou Licciardi (East Falmouth, Mass.) added eight stops (five solo), including 3.0 for a loss of eight and 0.5 sacks for the Hawks.

Stonehill opened the scoring on its first possession of the contest when Meyer hit White for an eight yard touchdown pass with 10:52 to play in the quarter to complete a ten play, 51-yard attempt. Saint Anselm forced a 7-7 deadlock with 1:37 left in the opening quarter when Murphy scored on a one yard plunge after the Hawks regained possession on a fumbled punt return at the 11 yard line.

Stonehill added two scores in the latter half of the second quarter to carry a 21-7 lead into halftime. Meyer, who entered the game 89 yards shy of the passing record, connected with White for a 67-yard touchdown pass and catch that put Meyer past Dello Iacono atop the Skyhawks career passing list with 5:40 left in the frame on a third and seven play.

Meyer found Reiph for a 44-yard touchdown on the final play of the half after the Skyhawks gained possession at their own 28 with 50-seconds on the clock. Johnson started the drive with rushes of six and 22 yards to set up the scoring play.

Saint Anselm scored on its opening possession of the second half with Murphy finding Charles for a 48 yard touchdown catch 2:02 into the third quarter. Stonehill answered on the ensuing possession with Meyer firing a 15-yard touchdown pass to White at the end of a six play, 71-yard drive, which was set up by a 32 yard reception by Robitaille.

Stonehill extended its lead to 31-14 with sophomore Steve Grzywacz (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central) hitting a 22-yard field goal with 5:33 left in the third after the Skyhawks gained possession off an interception by junior Nate Morris (Providence, R.I./Hargrave Military Academy).

Sophomore Shane Grayson (Ormond Beach, Fla.) booted a 41-yard field goal on Saint Anselm's next possession, but Stonehill added another touchdown before the end of the third quarter. Meyer found Robitaille for a 62 yard pass on the first play of the drive and then hit him again on third and goal from the four for a touchdown with 1:21 on the clock.

Stonehill pushed the lead to 45-17 on the first play of the fourth quarter on a Meyer quarterback keeper after the Skyhawks regained possession on an interception by sophomore Anthony Masucci (East Haven, Conn./Notre Dame).

Saint Anselm got a two yard touchdown plunge from Charles with 9:38 remaining in the fourth quarter, but Johnson capped the scoring on the night with a 66-yard touchdown scamper on the first play from scrimmage on Stonehill's following possession. 

Stonehill (1-1, 1-0 NE-10) has a short week before visiting Assumption College on Friday at 7 p.m. The Skyhawks return home a week later to host rival Bentley University as part of Family Weekend at the College on Saturday, September 28, at 6 p.m. Saint Anselm (0-2, 0-1 NE-10) hosts the University of New Haven on Friday at 7 p.m.
