Equestrian Finishes Fourth at Worcester State Show

Westerlind qualified for her second Regional Championship


Solar earned her second blue ribbon of the season

BERLIN, Mass. (March 25, 2018) – Stonehill College equestrian team kicked off 2018 with a fourth-place finish at the Worcester State University show on Sunday.

With today's performance, Stonehill holds a steady third place in the region, earning its fifth top-five mark of the season.

Boston College won the show, while three teams combined for 26 points including Worcester State University, who took second, Boston University, placed third, and Stonehill who finished fourth. The three-way tie was broken by the number of points over the fences.

Senior Abigail Westerlind (Auburn, Massachusetts/Auburn) qualified for her second regional championship with her second-place finish in novice flat, tallying her fourth second-place mark this season. The senior will join sophomore Mariah Hanson (South Burlington, Vermont/South Burlington) and classmate Baylee Kimbar (Worcester, Massachusetts/West Boylston) at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Zone 1, Region 4 Championships on Saturday, March 31 at Winters End Farm.

Freshman Kylie Katz (Northford, Connecticut/Lyman Hail) took home her second blue ribbon of the season, and first in intermediate fences. She also competed in intermediate flat, where she placed fifth overall. Kaitlin Kotfilia (Hadley, Massachusetts/Hopkins Academy) also finished fifth, but in intermediate fences.


Hanson took home her second first-place ribbon of the season

Along with Katz, sophomore Laura Solar (Melville, New York/Our Lady of Mercy Academy) and Hanson were also awarded blue ribbons. Solar collected her second first-place ribbon and first in novice fences, while Hanson also earned her second first-place ribbon of the year and first in novice flat.

Sophomore Emma McConville (North Attleboro, Massachusetts/Wheeler School) finished third in open flat, while she also took home fourth in open fences.

Freshman Molly McCutcheon (Florence, Massachusetts/Northampton) competed in her fourth show this season, taking home fourth place in walk-trot-canter.

In their first IHSA show, sophomore Nicole Speros and freshman Marianne Kenney (Sudbury, Massachusetts/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) both took home top-five marks. Speros finished third in walk, trot, as Kenney placed fourth in novice fences.

Stonehill will compete at the Point Show at Winters End Farm on Friday, March 30 in Stoughton, Massachusetts for last chances to qualify for the IHSA Zone 1, Region 4 Championships on Saturday, March 31, which will also take place at Winters End Farm.
