Stonehill Opens with Third Place Finish at Brandeis Show

HOLLISTON, Mass. (October 14, 2014) – The Stonehill College equestrian team opened its fall season with a third place finish in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Zone 1, Region 4 opener, hosted by Brandeis University at August Farm on Sunday.

Stonehill finished with 32 points, tied with Boston University, while Wellesley College won the show with 39 points, followed by Tufts University in second with 37 points. All 11

Skyhawk riders earned ribbons at the show, led by senior Cassandra Otis (Downingtown, Pennsylvania/Bishop Shanahan) who received a blue ribbon for open equitation over fences. She also placed fifth in open equitation on the flat. Classmate Danielle Franchi (Islip, New York/Islip) placed fourth for both open fences and open flat.

Senior Kayleigh McDonnell (Rutland, Vermont/Rutland), who placed third at the IHSA National Championships for individual novice equitation over fences in May, produced a pair of second place finishes to get her fall season underway on Sunday. She placed second for both intermediate flat and intermediate fences on the afternoon. Sophomore Sera Torregiano (Saratoga Springs, New York/Saratoga Springs) also placed second for her intermediate fences class.

Freshman Elizabeth Bennett (Slingerlands, New York/Academy of the Holy Names) earned two second place finishes for both novice flat and novice fences in her collegiate debut for Stonehill. Junior Fiona Carroll (Alexandria, Virginia/Bishop Ireton) also placed second for her novice fences class, while sophomore Taylor Uccello (Westford, Massachusetts/Westford Academy) collected a red ribbon for her second place finish in her novice flat class.

Sophomores Kristin Buckley (Leominster, Massachusetts/Saint Bernard's) and Nina Fultz (Littleton, Massachusetts/Littleton) both turned in strong performances in their first ever IHSA shows. Buckley placed second for walk-trot equitation, while Fultz placed third in her walk-trot-canter class. Senior Justine Mitchell (Sunderland, Massachusetts/Frontier Regional) rounded out Stonehill's participants with a sixth place ribbon for walk-trot-canter.

Stonehill is off until Saturday and Sunday, October 25 and 26, when it has back to back shows hosted by Boston University and Tufts University, respectively. Both shows start at 9 a.m., and will be hosted by Holly Hill Show Stables in Hanover, Massachusetts, on Saturday and North Gate Farm in Sudbury, Massachusetts, on Sunday.
