American International Outlasts Baseball, 8-7, in Extra Innings

Marshall tallied a career-best seven strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida (March 6, 2020) – The Stonehill College baseball team was edged by Northeast-10 Conference foe American International College, 8-7, in 11 innings in non-league play in Florida at the field on the campus of Nova Southeastern University Friday night.

Key Moments:

  • American International College kicked off the game with a run in the bottom of the first, as Shawn Boston was hit by a pitch. Boston stole second and made his way to third on a throwing error, before Matt Krause singled up the middle scoring Boston for a 1-0 advantage.
  • The Yellow Jackets got on the board again in the bottom of the third with two outs, as Cam Defeo sent the ball up the middle scoring Titus Kaewthong from second for a 2-0 lead.
  • Stonehill was retired in five of the 11 innings with three-straight batters as they were held to no hits through the sixth inning. The Skyhawks' Swanholm, with two outs, lifted the ball over the fence in left center field cutting the deficit to one with his first-collegiate homerun, 3-2.
  • On a 1-2 count in the ninth inning with two outs, Donlan found the sweet part of the bat and sent it over the left field fence for his first-career homerun to tie the game, 3-3.
  • In their first extra-inning game of the season, Stonehill got the bases loaded twice in the bottom of the 10th. The Yellow Jackets retired two with strikeouts and Donlan came up connecting on a 3-2 count for a double to left field scored clearing the bases for the Skyhawks' first lead of the game, 6-3. American International got out of a bases loaded jam with their third strikeout of the frame.

  • Wilde recorded a bases loaded clearing double in the top of the 10th 
    In the bottom of the inning, the Skyhawks walked in a run and then with two outs, Brandon Gaul singled to right, driving in two runs to tie the game once more, 6-6.
  • Stonehill squeezed in a run with two outs in the 11th off a passed ball, as Noah Lucier scored for the lead. The Yellow Jackets, with one out and the bases loaded, saw Boston drive in the tying run, 7-7, followed by a sacrifice fly from Matt Krause for the game-winning hit, 8-7.

  • Marshall's seven strikeouts was a career high for the sophomore.
  • American International College broke its three-game losing streak with the extra inning effort.
