Baseball Comes From Behind for 10-7 Win Over Molloy

MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina (February 23, 2019) – The Stonehill College baseball team won its third game of the season with a come-from-behind 10-7 victory against Molloy College in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on Saturday in the Ripken Experience Northeast Challenge.

For the Skyhawks (3-1), junior pitcher Richard Ryan earned his first-collegiate win and Matt Smith recorded his first-collegiate save. At the plate, freshman Aidan Wilde went 4-for-5 with two runs scored, one double, and one RBI. Matthew Rocco led Stonehill with three RBI swinging 1-for-5 at the plate with one run scored, one walk, while Harrison Sabo combined for 3-for-5 at the plate with one run scored, two RBI, a double, and a sacrifice fly. John Orzechowski went 2-for-6 with two runs scored, and his fifth stolen base of the season.

Stonehill saw their first runner in the top of the first inning, but the Skyhawks were quickly retired, stranding two on base. Molloy combined for seven hits scoring five runs in the bottom of the frame to take an early 5-0 lead.

The Skyhawks fought back in the next four innings totaling six runs to take its first lead, 6-5. With the bases loaded and one out in the top of the second inning, Rocco grounded out to the pitcher but scored Shane O'Halloran from third, 5-1. In the top of the third frame, Stonehill's Patrick Downey pushed Sabo across the plate as he grounded out to second base, 5-2, while O'Halloran singled bringing in Rob Duarte who walked to get on base, 5-3.

Sabo saw his second double of the season to add another run to the board for a one-run deficit, 5-4, in the fourth. Rocco launched a ball to center field in the top of the fifth to bring in two runs for a 6-5 lead, before the Lions tied the score in the bottom of the frame.  

In the top of the seventh, three runs crossed home for the Skyhawks to get back on top, 9-6, and the Lions responded with one run to cut the deficit to two, 9-7. Stonehill was able to squeeze in one more run in the top of the eighth, as Wilde ripped a shot down the left field line for a one-out double scoring Downey from third, 10-7. Smith threw for 2.2 innings to hold off the Lions in the final frames earning his first-collegiate save.

The Skyhawks conclude the Ripken Experience Northeast Challenge with a 9:00 a.m. game against New York Institute of Technology tomorrow, Sunday, February 24 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
