Skyhawks score seven runs over final two innings in game one win

EASTON, Mass.  (April 17, 2016) – The Stonehill College baseball team, ranked tenth in this week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) East Region Poll, split a pair of games at Saint Anselm College today to take three out of four games in the weekend series.

Junior Ben Monte (New Haven, Connecticut/Guilford) paced Stonehill's offense, going 3-for-8 with a homerun and four RBI. Senior Chris Hoyt (Walpole, Massachusetts/Xaverian Brothers) finished 4-for-9 with two doubles, two stolen bases and five runs, while classmate Brian Hocking (Duxbury, Massachusetts/BC High) recorded two hits to go with three runs and two RBI.

Sophomore Michael Young (Mashpee, Massachusetts/Pope John Paul II) pitched the opener for Stonehill and picked up his third win of the season, tossing eight innings while surrendering just two runs and striking out six batters. Sophomore Joe Klingensmith (Topsfield, Massachusetts/Masconomet) took the loss in game two after lasting 3.2 innings and allowing six runs to go with three strikeouts.

For Saint Anselm, freshman Tyler McKeon (Rutland, Massachusetts/St. John's) led the Hawks at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI and a run. Junior Nick Bragole (Newburyport, Massachusetts/Saint John's Prep) went 3-for-7 with an RBI and senior Paul Trabucco (Salem, New Hampshire/Central Catholic) also posted a three hit effort, adding three walks and a run. 

Stonehill 8, Saint Anselm 2

Stonehill jumped out to an early lead after scoring a run in the top of the first inning, as Hoyt doubled down the line and stole third base, setting up Hocking for a sacrifice fly to score the game's first run. Saint Anselm responded in the seventh inning as junior Jon McQuarrie (Salem, New Hampshire/Bishop Guertin) reached base on a fielder's choice, scoring senior Allan McQuarrie (Salem, New Hampshire/Bishop Guertin) from third base to tie the score up at one run apiece.

Sophomore Michael Young pitched eight innings and struck out six batters in the opener.

Stonehill blew the game open in the eighth inning when the Skyhawks plated five runs to pull away from Saint Anselm. After Hoyt reached base on a fielding error by the third baseman, junior Steve Lee (Braintree, Massachusetts/Braintree) doubled to left center to move both runners into scoring position with one out. Hocking then singled to second base to score Hoyt and Monte followed up with a huge three-run homerun to left field to highlight the big inning for the Skyhawks.

After Saint Anselm got a run back in the bottom of the eighth, Stonehill answered with two more runs in the ninth inning. Lee drove in the first run of the inning when he reached base on a fielding error by the center fielder, scoring sophomore Isiah Nunez (Brooklyn, New York/Berkshire School). Monte then singled to the shortstop to score Hoyt and cap the scoring on the game.

Saint Anselm 8, Stonehill 4

Stonehill once again got on the board first, as Hocking doubled to left field and junior Eddie Bowler (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham) singled down the right field line to record an RBI and make the score 1-0 Skyhawks.

After Saint Anselm took the lead in the second inning 2-1, Stonehill tied the game at two runs apiece in the third, as Bowler doubled to right center field to score Hoyt.

Saint Anselm pushed four runs across the plate in the fourth, highlighted by a two RBI double by McKeon to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish. After Stonehill scored a run in the fifth, Saint Anselm answered with a run of its own in the sixth and seventh to make the score 8-3.

Stonehill (18-13, 7-6 NE-10) returns to the diamond on Tuesday as they host Assumption College for a single contest starting at 3:30 p.m. Saint Anselm (8-23, 3-11 NE-10) is back in action on Wednesday as they travel to Merrimack for a single game starting at 3:30 p.m.
