Stonehill Falls to Assumption, 12-3

Skyhawks get out-hit 14-4 to snap three game winning streak

WORCESTER, Mass. (April 14, 2016) – The Stonehill College baseball team, ranked tenth in this week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) East Region Poll, dropped a 12-3 decision to Assumption College this afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division play at Rocheleau Field.

Sophomore Justin Nicklas (Foxboro, Massachusetts/St. Sebastian's) led the Stonehill at the plate today, reaching base all three times he stepped up to bat. He finished 1-for-1 with two walks, a double, two runs and an RBI, while senior Brian Campbell (Franklin, Massachusetts/Mount Saint Charles) went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Classmate Chris Hoyt (Walpole, Massachusetts/Xaverian Brothers) recorded a base knock, going 1-for-3 with a walk and junior Eddie Bowler (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham) registered the only other hit for the Skyhawks, going 1-for-4.

Junior lefty Patrick Hurley (Roslindale, Massachusetts/Catholic Memorial) took the loss on the mound for Stonehill, pitching 3.2 innings while surrendering six runs (five earned) on eight hits and three strikeouts. Freshman Justin Lynch (Shelton, Connecticut/Shelton) was the most effective reliever for the Skyhawks, tossing three innings of one run ball while only allowing two hits and striking out three batters.

For Assumption, freshman Hunter Tralli (Berlin, Connecticut/Northwest Catholic) had a tremendous day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs. Sophomore Andrew Jaehnig (Quincy, Massachusetts/Boston College) went 1-for-4 with a homerun, four RBI and three runs, while junior Jake Byrne (Grafton, Massachusetts/Saint John's) went 2-for-4 with a double, three RBI and a run.


Junior Eddie Bowler went 1-for-4 on the day.

Assumption scored the game's first three runs in the bottom of the first inning, using four singles and an error to put the Skyhawks in an early hole. 

Stonehill got a run back in the third, when Nicklas walked to lead-off the inning and Hoyt followed with a single through the left side of the infield. Campbell then delivered a two-out RBI single to right center field, bringing the Skyhawks to within two runs.

Assumption pulled away in the bottom half of the third, plating three more runs to make the score 6-1. Jaehnig connected on a two-run homerun to right field and senior Colin Clancy (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford) hit an RBI double to right field to account for the Greyhounds three runs in the inning.

Stonehill once again fought back, scoring twice in the fourth as senior Brian Hocking (Duxbury, Massachusetts/BC High) walked and Nicklas doubled to left field, scoring Hocking from first base. Sophomore Isiah Nunez (Brooklyn, New York/Berkshire School) then reached base on a throwing error by the shortstop, plating Nicklas.

After Assumption scored a run in the seventh, the Greyhounds unloaded five more runs in the eighth to seal the victory. Byrne hit a bases loaded single down the left field line, scoring two runners and Clancy delivered a single to center field and advanced to second on a fielding error to plate two more runs to highlight the inning for the Greyhounds.

Stonehill (15-12, 4-6 NE-10), returns to the diamond Saturday as the Skyhawks travel to Saint Anselm College to take on the Hawks for a doubleheader starting at noon. Assumption (14-15, 9-6 NE-10) is back in action Saturday as well, as they travel to Southern New Hampshire to take on the Penmen for a weekend series starting at 3:00 p.m.
