Senior Chris Hoyt posted his third consecutive multi-hit game, recording a triple, a double, driving in a run and scoring a run in today's win.

Skyhawks steal five bases; throw out four runners in 5-2 win

PALM BEACH, Fla. (March 8, 2016) – The Stonehill College baseball team stole five bases, directly leading to three runs, and caught four runners trying to steal in this afternoon's 5-2 win over Bloomfield College in non-conference action at the Santaluces Complex in Palm Beach, Florida.

Sophomore righthander Joe Klingensmith (Topsfield, Massachusetts/Masconomet) earned his first win of the season, holding Bloomfield scoreless through 5.2 innings of work, striking out four while walking none. Junior Aubrey Solomon (Groton, Massachusetts/Lawrence Academy) closed the door on Bloomfield for his third save of the season. 

Senior outfielder Chris Hoyt (Walpole, Massachusetts/Xaverian Brothers) continued his hot hitting out of the leadoff spot, as he went 2-for-5 with a triple, double, a RBI and a run. Hoyt has now recorded three straight multi-hit games and has registered a hit in all but one of Stonehill's first ten games of the season. Senior outfielder Eric Schneider (Camarillo, California/St. Bonaventure) also posted a two hit effort, going 2-for-3 with two runs and two stolen bases. Junior Eddie Bowler (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham) chipped in with two hits with a double and a RBI, while classmate Steve Lee (Braintree, Massachusetts/Braintree) tallied a hit and a run.

Bloomfield was led by sophomore second baseman Anthony Lantigua (Belleville, New Jersey/Belleville) and freshman center fielder Amir Garcia (Passaic, New Jersey/Passaic High School), who each recorded a hit and RBI, while sophomore first baseman Harry Montero (Millville, New Jersey/Millville) finished 1-for-4 with a run.

Junior righty Carlos Tejada (New York, New York/Colegio Amapola) took the loss for the Bears despite turning in a solid effort, as he struck out seven and gave up just three runs on four hits through six innings.

Klingensmith

Stonehill scored the runs first game in the fourth when Schneider was hit by a pitch and subsequently stole second base. With two outs in the inning Bowler hit a RBI single to drive in his third run of the season. Stonehill struck again just an inning later in the top of the fifth, as Sophomore Alexander Joyce (Newton, Massachusetts/Newton North) walked and stole second base, followed by a Hoyt triple to double the Skyhawk lead.

Stonehill plated one more in the sixth and two more in the seventh as the Skyhawks took a 5-0 lead. Schneider singled to lead off the sixth and was followed by a single by junior Ben Monte (New Haven, Connecticut/Guilford). Bowler then dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners over and set up senior Brian Hocking's (Duxbury, Massachusetts/BC High) sacrifice fly to score Schneider. In the seventh inning, After Hoyt doubled, Lee hit a single to move Hoyt over to thirdbase. Lee then stole second where the catcher overthrew the base leading both Hoyt and Lee to score.    

Bloomfield got two runs back in the bottom of the seventh using two hits, a walk and an error to plate both runs. Montero got the rally started with a single and was moved to second as freshman Emil Lopez (Paramus, New Jersey/Paramus High School) reached base on an error. Junior Harold Hester (Lakehurst, New Jersey/Manchester Township) walked to load the bases and Lantigua hit a sacrifice fly to right field to record an RBI. Garcia then drove in Lopez with two outs to extend the Bears rally. Sophomore righty Matt Peters (Portsmouth, Rhode Island/Portsmouth) entered the game for Stonehill and got the remaining out in the inning to get the Skyhawks out of the jam. Solomon pitched a perfect ninth to earn his third save of the season.

Stonehill will be looking to exact revenge as they take on Post tomorrow morning in a rematch of a doubleheader sweep by the Eagles this past weekend. The contest is scheduled for 9 a.m.
