Skyhawks struggle to generate offense, scoring just one run on seven hits in two games
PALM BEACH, Fla. (March 5, 2016) – The Stonehill College baseball team fell victim to a pair of dominant pitching performances as Post University won both ends of today's doubleheader as part of the Palm Beach Challenge at the Santaluces Complex in Lake Worth, Florida. Stonehill dropped the opener, 1-0, before falling in the second game by a score of 2-1.
Post's two starting pitchers went for a combined two complete games today, allowing just one unearned run on seven hits. Junior Matthew D'Ariano (Yonkers, New York/Indian Hills C.C.) earned the win in the opener after completing all 7 innings, allowing just four hits and no runs while racking up six strikeouts. Sophomore Nick Arnold (West Islip, New York/West Islip) took the ball in game two and posted an equally dominant performance, pitching a complete game with just one unearned run, 11 strikeouts and one walk.
Stonehill's sophomore starting pitcher Michael Young (Mashpee, Massacuhsetts/Pope John Paul II) and junior lefty Jeremy Roberts (Reading, Massachusetts/Malden Catholic) were hard luck losers on the day as they were nearly as impressive as Post's starting pitchers. Young opened the first game tossing a complete game with one earned run, while allowing just four hits with seven strikeouts. Roberts followed that performance up with a complete game of his own, allowing two earned runs on four hits and four strikeouts.

Neither team posed much of a threat for the rest of the game until the bottom of the sixth inning when sophomore Alex Wright (Butler, New Jersey/Butler) doubled with one out in the inning. Junior Joey Picone (Washingtonville, New York/Onondaga CC) moved Wright to third on a single and junior Rafael Tous (Flemington, New Jersey/Immaculata) drove in the game winning run with a single of his own. With one last chance to tie the game, Stonehill went down in order in the top of the seventh to end the game.
Much like the first game, the second game turned into another pitcher's duel. Post got on the board first in the second inning when sophomore Don Walsh (Hamilton, New Jersey/Notre Dame Prep) hit a triple and junior Dan O'Neill (Saddle Brook, New Jersey/Bergen C.C.) drove him in with a fielders' choice. Post doubled their lead in the third inning on a homerun by sophomore David Sarmiento (Miami, Florida/Flanagan).
Stonehill responded in the bottom of the third inning, plating their first run of the doubleheader. Senior Chris Hoyt (Walpole, Massachusetts/Xaverian Brothers) reached first base with two outs in the inning, striking out but racing to first as the ball got past the catcher. Sophomore Tyler Carey (Raynham, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham) followed up with a single to move Hoyt to third and senior Brian Campbell (Franklin, Massachusetts/Mount Saint Charles) drove in Hoyt for his seventh RBI of the season.
Stonehill was subsequently set down in order in the next three out of four innings, with Justin Nicklas (Foxboro, Massachusetts/St. Sebastian's) the lone baserunner for the Skyhawks, hitting a single in the fifth inning.
Stonehill (2-5, 0-0 NE-10) will be back in action tomorrow against NE-10 foe American International College with a start time of noon. Post (4-4, 0-0 CACC) will play tomorrow as well, as the Eagles are slated to play Nyack College.
