Junior Steve Lee leads Skyhawks with 3-for-8 effort at the plate
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (February 26, 2016) – The Stonehill College baseball team was swept by the Queens College Knights in a double-header this afternoon at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Queens recorded 14 hits and benefited from six stolen bases to earn a 9-5 victory in the opener, before posting a 2-1 triumph in game two to complete the sweep.
Junior shortstop Steve Lee (Braintree, Massachusetts/Braintree) led the Skyhawks at the plate, going 3-for-8 with a homerun, a double, one RBI and two runs scored. Senior outfielder Brian Campbell (Franklin, Massachusetts/Mount Saint Charles) went 3-for-7 with three RBIs, while junior outfielder Ben Monte (New Haven, Connecticut/Guilford) hit a homerun. Senior designated hitter Brian Hocking (Duxbury, Massachusetts/BC High) finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and sophomore first baseman Eddie Bowler (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham) got on base four times, recording two hits and two walks. Sophomore outfielder Thomas Parrish (Cortland Manor, New York/Walter Panas) paced a Queens offense that piled up 11 runs on 16 hits over the two games with a 5-for-7 effort at the plate, including two walks, two stolen bases, two runs and a RBI. Junior shortstop Kevin Kolesar (New City, New York/Clarkstown) went 3-for-7 with four stolen bases and three runs, while senior first baseman JP Koulotouros (Bayside, New York/St. Francis Prep) added a single and a homerun.
Stonehill sophomore Michael Young (Mashpee, Massachusetts/Pope John Paul II) dropped to 0-1 with the loss after giving up five runs on seven hits through four frames.
Queens took control early, scoring three times in the top of the first while recording four hits. Kolesar, Parish and Koulotouros each singled to start the game and load the bases with no outs. Sophomore Karl Klesin (Glendale, New York/Archbishop Molloy) was hit by a pitch two batters later to bring the first run in, while freshman Thomas Modina (Staten lsland, New York/Monsignor Farrell) followed that up with a two RBI single.
Queens tacked on two more runs before Stonehill broke through in the bottom of the third, when sophomore catcher Alexander Joyce (Newton, Massachusetts/Newton North) and senior Chris Hoyt (Walpole, Massachusetts/Xaverian Brothers) both walked and were brought home by a two run RBI single by Campbell.
Stonehill remained in striking distance of the lead, hitting two lead-off solo homeruns by Monte in the sixth inning and Lee in the seventh. Koulotouros led off the seventh inning with a homerun of his own to push the lead to 8-5, before Parish hit a single, stole second and scored on a pass ball to cap the scoring in game one.

Queens 2, Stonehill 1
Game number two was highlighted by stellar pitching performances by both teams as Stonehill's junior lefthander Patrick Hurley (Roslindale, Massachusetts/Catholic Memorial) went 6.2 innings, giving up just one hit and one unearned run, while his counterpart, junior righty Joseph Broderick (West Islip, New York/West Islip) logged six innings, striking out nine and allowing one earned run.
Stonehill got on the board in the first inning when Lee smacked a double and Campbell knocked him in with a single, but was caught stealing to end the inning. Queens responded in the bottom half of the first after Kolesar reached on an error and stole second and third base, before reaching home on a passed ball.
The Skyhawks couldn't capitalize to retake the lead, leaving five men stranded in scoring position throughout the rest of the game. Queens junior outfielder Diego Gonzalez (College Point, New York/Benjamin Cardozo) scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning when he reached first on a single, proceeded to steal second base before he was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Gonzalez then scored on an error to give the Knights the first two wins of their season and the sweep.
Stonehill (0-3-0, 0-0 NE-10) will look to bounce back tomorrow afternoon as they take on Felician College in the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, while Queens (2-1, 0-0 ECC) returns to action tomorrow as well as they square off with Franklin Pierce University.
