NE10 Scholar-Athletes of the Year Nominees Announced
EASTON, Mass. (May 22, 2019) – Stonehill College senior All-American Alex Demeule and Krista Fernandes have been listed among the 30 nominees for the Northeast-10 Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards, both of which are selected by a committee of faculty members and athletic administrators.
To be eligible for nomination of this prestigious award, a student-athlete must be in their final year of athletic eligibility during 2018-19, must be graduating with a degree this May (unless in a master's program), must be enrolled in a full-time course load, and must have a minimum final cumulative grade point average of a 3.30. The two respective winners are set to be announced from a group of three finalists, and honored at the NE10 year-end banquet in Springfield, Massachusetts, on Monday, June 3, at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
The duo was recently recognized as Stonehill's Edward E. Martin Female and Male Scholar-Athletes during the department's Student-Athlete Awards Ceremony in late April.
Demeule, a finance major at Stonehill, is a three-sport student-athlete with the Skyhawks men's cross country and indoor and outdoor track & field programs. Over his four-year career, Demeule has earned a 3.82 grade point average, with a 3.90 in his major. He has been recognized with the St. Thomas Aquinas Medal for having the highest cumulative grade point average on the men's cross country and track & field programs, is a Google Cloud Academic All-America third team selection as a junior and received the NE10 Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award for cross country last fall. He has been inducted to the Lambda Epsilon Sigma and Beta Gamma Sigma honor societies, is a member of the Financial Management Association and was named the finance department Student of the Year. Demeule has volunteered his time with Stonehill's Earth Day Event, My Brother's Keeper and at the NCAA Division II Championships community outreach projects. He is portfolio manager with Stonehill's Investment Finance Initiative (SCIFI) a yearlong, comprehensive, academic and professional development course of study charged with the management of the Mary Herlihy Opportunity Fund at the College.

Demeule earned All-America honors as a member of Stonehill's 4000-meter distance medley relay team that placed fifth in a then school-record 9:49.12 at the 2018 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships and has been a key member of a Stonehill cross country team that has won the last two NCAA East Regional Championships as well as the 2017 NE10 title as part of an undefeated season leading up to nationals, where he has competed at the NCAA Cross Country Championships three-straight years. Demeule is also a two-time participant at the NCAA II Indoor Track & Field Championships with the DMR.
Fernandes, a two-sport student-athlete with the Skyhawks' women's indoor and outdoor track & field program, has graduated with a degree in psychology with a minor in business holding a 3.81 grade-point average and a 3.93 GPA in her major. She received Google Cloud Academic All-District I first team honors as a junior and has been named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association All-Academic team (USTFCCCA) twice in her career. Within the Conference, Fernandes has earned four Academic All-Conference honors, while being named on the NE10 Academic Honor Roll with Academic Distinction all seven semesters to date. The psychology major is also a member of both the Psi Chi and Lambda Epsilon Sigma Honor Societies, received the Stonehill College Presidential Scholarship, and has been named to both the Dean's List and Athletic Director's Honor Roll. Fernandes was a research intern with the National Institute of Health with Brown University, studying the predictors of PTSD in children.
On the track, Fernandes has climbed the ladder of success throughout her four years and was a three-time qualifier for the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships with the 4000-meter distance medley relay team. Two out of the three times, Fernandes was a participant on the national stage running the 400-meter leg assisting the relay team to a 12th-place finish in 2018 and a 13th-place mark in 2017. She has combined for 11 USTFCCCA All-East Region honors, 10 All-Conference accolades, and is a three-time NE10 Champion. She won the 400-meter run during the 2019 indoor season, and assisted the DMR to win the 2018 and 2019 indoor championships. At New England's, Fernandes is a four-time All-New England honoree, while also assisting the DMR to the 2017 title. She has been a key member of the Stonehill track & field team that has won all eight NE10 track & field championships in her eight seasons on the team. This season she was named a captain and currently holds the record for the indoor 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:44.77 from 2017.

With 21 intercollegiate sports, Stonehill boasts one of the top athletic and academic programs in the country. In addition to finishing in the top three of the Northeast-10 Conference Presidents' Cup standings for overall athletic performance 14 straight years, the Skyhawks have received the NCAA Division II Presidents' Award for Academic Achievement each of the first eighth years of the program's existence of honoring institutions with an Academic Success Rate (ASR) of 90-percent or better. Stonehill has earned a 96% Academic Success Ranking (ASR) by the NCAA, which considers the academic success rate of the institution based on the graduation rate of student-athletes, good for seventh among all NCAA Division II institutions, with eight Skyhawk teams receiving a perfect rating of 100%. In addition, the Skyhawks are ranked 11th in the National Collegiate Scouting Association (NCSA) Power Rankings for Division II used to assess the academic and athletic standards of all NCAA and NAIA athletic programs.
