Sixty-four percent of Skyhawk student-athletes recognized for posting GPA of 3.0 or higher
Fall 2014 NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll
EASTON, Mass. (January 30, 2015) – A total of 279 Stonehill College student-athletes have been named to the Northeast-10 Conference Fall 2014 Commissioner’s Honor Roll for earning a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, the league office announced yesterday.
Stonehill’s 279 honorees for the fall semester is the second highest total in the conference, trailing only Bentley University’s 360. Stonehill was also among the eight schools in the NE-10 to have at least 60-percent of its student-athletes named to the Honor Roll, as 64% of the 436 total Skyhawk student-athletes were recognized.
Six Stonehill student-athletes achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA during the fall semester, highlighted by junior Trisha Pierson (East Hanover, New Jersey/Hanover Park) from the women’s track & field program, who posted a 4.0 for the fourth consecutive semester.
Senior Dan Fratus (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North) from the baseball team, sophomore Jackie Del Bonis (North Attleboro, Massachusetts/North Attleboro) from the field hockey team, and freshmen Sam Bradford (Bedford, Massachusetts/Bedford) from the cross country team, Charlie Calenda (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford) from the football team, and Olivia Peterson (Westford, Massachusetts/Westford Academy) from the softball team also registered 4.0 GPA’s for the fall semester.

The softball program led the way with a 3.59 team GPA last semester, as 13 of the 14 student-athletes (93%) were above 3.0 individually. Seven members of the softball team had a GPA of 3.70 or higher, while four were at 3.90 or better, including junior Megan Ruonavaara (Rocky Hill, Connecticut/Rocky Hill), a 2014 Daktronics All-East Region second team and NE-10 All-Conference first team selection.
Stonehill’s men’s tennis squad checked in second in terms of team GPA with a mark of 3.42 during the fall semester, as eight of its ten members (80%) were above 3.0. The women’s soccer team saw 89% (24 of 27) of its student-athletes earn a spot on the Honor Roll, while 48 Skyhawk football players were recognized, the most from any team.
Also included on this semester’s NE-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll were All-East Region selections Emily Iverson (Elmhurst, Illinois/York) and Delia Phillips (St. James, New York/Smithtown East) from the volleyball team, senior captain Ben Zandonella (South Windsor, Connecticut/South Windsor) from the men’s soccer program, and junior All-American Elizabeth Thornton (Needham, Massachusetts/Needham) from the national semifinalist field hockey team.
With 20 intercollegiate sports, Stonehill boasts one of the top athletic and academic programs in the country. In addition to finishing in the top three in the final NE-10 Presidents' Cup standings ten straight years, the Skyhawks have received the NCAA Division II Presidents' Award for Academic Achievement each of the first three years of the program's existence of honoring programs with an Academic Success Rate (ASR) of 90-percent or better. Stonehill has earned a 96% Academic Success Ranking (ASR) by the NCAA, which considers the academic success rate of the institution based on the graduation rate of student-athletes, good for eighth among all NCAA Division II institutions, with 12 Skyhawk teams receiving a perfect rating of 100%. In addition, the Skyhawks are ranked third in the National Collegiate Scouting Association (NCSA) Power Rankings for Division II used to assess the academic and athletic standards of all NCAA and NAIA athletic programs.
