Women’s Cross Country Opens Season with Fifth Place at Shawn M. Nassaney Invitational

SMITHFIELD, Rhode Island (September 8, 2018) – The Stonehill College women's cross country team, ranked No. 1 in the East Region and No. 23 in the nation in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Preseason Poll, finished fifth with 128 points at the Shawn M. Nassaney Invitational, hosted by Bryant University Saturday morning.

Boston College took home the title, scoring 24 points, while Northeastern University tallied 75 points for second place. The College of Holy Cross placed third with 111 points, while Sacred Heart University combined for 112 points taking home fourth place and Stonehill was the first non-Division I school to place taking home 128 points and fifth place.

Senior Makenzie Cyr was the first Skyhawk to cross the finish line with a time of 19:00.7 in the five-kilometer race finishing 22nd place out of 99 competitors, while sophomore Sam Curtin and Alyssa Freeman followed in 23rd and 24th place, clocking in at 19:01.6 and 19:01.8, respectively.

Freshman Isabella Kennedy competed in her for collegiate race clocking in a time of 19:08.7, finishing 30th, while Siobhan O'Keefe and Rebecca Erhard also ran in their first-collegiate race. O'Keefe crossed the finish line in 19:12.4, good for 36th place, while Erhard wasn't far behind with her time of 19:16.1, placing 38th.

Junior Kelly Higgins ran the five-kilometer race in 19:28.1 taking home 46th place, as the last Skyhawk to earn points towards the team score. Her sister, Kacie Higgins ran the course in 19:36.6, finishing 52nd, as freshman Claire Mason and junior Jordan Callahan crossed the finish line back-to-back. Mason finished 58th with a time of 19:44.4, while Callahan ran the race in 19:45.8, good for 59th place.

The Skyhawks travel to Kutztown, Pennsylvania for the Kutztown Division II Challenge hosted by Kutztown University on Saturday, September 15.
