Knox was previously tabbed NE10 Athlete of the Year
EASTON, Mass. (November 9, 2017) – Emily Knox (Worcester, Massachusetts/Notre Dame Academy), senior captain of the women's cross country team, was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Women's East Region Athlete of the Year, as announced by the organization Wednesday.
Most recently, Knox raced to the finish at the NCAA Division II East Regional Championship, where she took home the individual title. This was the first time in her career that she finished first at the East Regional Championship, but it was the third-straight year that a Stonehill women's runner brought home the title, as Nicole Borofski '17 won it the previous two years.
Prior to the East Regional, Knox also captured first place at the Northeast-10 Championship, for once again, the third-straight individual title in program history, with Borofski '17 earing back-to-back titles. This was the fourth time in conference history that a school has won the individual title three-straight years, with Springfield leading the way with six-straight individual tittles form 1987-92. She helped the Skyhawks to its 16th title in program history, and its ninth-straight, defeating Assumption College by two points.
With the win, Knox was also named the NE10 Women's Athlete of the Year. This put Stonehill at three-straight Women's Athlete of the Year Awards, again, after Borofski '17 won it two years prior. It was the fourth time in conference history that a program won the Women's Athlete of the Year award three-straight years, with Springfield winning it for six-straight years and Merrimack College earning it four-straight years.
During the season, the senior also finished as the runner up at the six kilometer DII/III Challenge in Kutztown, Pennsylvania, while she also finished 20th at the New England Championships, helping Stonehill to a 10th-place team mark.
Throughout her four years on the cross country team, Knox was named to the NCAA Division II All-East Region team her sophomore and freshman years, and now her senior year. She was also tabbed on the NE10 All-Conference second team once and first team twice. Academically, her name has been put on the NE10 Commissioner's Honor Roll and the Athletic Director's Honor Roll.
She is a 2014 graduate of Notre Dame Academy, where she competed in both cross country and track and field. Knox served as captain during all three seasons her senior year, while assists her cross country team to district runner-ups her junior and senior season. During the indoor and outdoor seasons her senior year, the Worcester, Massachusetts native helped her track team win the district championship.
The Stonehill men's team punched their 15th-straight ticket, while the women are heading to their 17th-straight appearance at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championship in Evansville, Indiana, hosted by the University of Southern Indiana on Saturday, November 18 at Angel Mounds. The women's race will begin at 11:15 a.m., followed by the men's race at 12:30 p.m.
