Women’s Cross Country Places 10th at New England Championship

Knox is the first Skyhawk across the finish line

BOSTON, Mass. (October 7, 2017) – The Stonehill College women's cross country team, ranked first in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCCA) East Regional poll and 22nd in the national poll placed 10th among 28 teams at the New England Championship Saturday afternoon at Franklin Park.

The University of New Hampshire took home the title with a total of 101 points, while Boston College was the runner up with 119 points and MIT came in third with 131 points. The University of Vermont totaled 188 points for fourth place, while UMass Amherst (191 points) and Holy Cross (191) finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Northeastern University (194 points) and Sacred Heart University (194 points) followed in seventh and eighth place, respectively, while Dartmouth (196 points) and Stonehill (266 points) rounded out the top 10.

The Skyhawks were the first Northeast-10 team to cross the finish line, as Assumption College was next in 12th place, totaling 302 points.

Senior Emily Knox (Worcester, Massachusetts/Notre Dame Academy) was the first Skyhawk to cross the finish line with a time of 18:31, good for 20th place. Junior Makenzie Cyr (Douglas, Massachusetts/Douglas) was next placing 32nd out of 194 competitors with a time of 18:49.

Freshman Sam Curtin (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North) appeared in her first collegiate championship taking 58th place with a time of 19:12 and sophomore Anna Lastra (Bridgton, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) was the next Purple and White across the finish with a time of 19:28, good for 74th place.

Senior Abby Hersom (Rockland, Maine/Oceanside) and sophomore Alyssa Freeman (Billerica, Massachusetts/Billerica Memorial) finished close to each other, as Hersom took 82nd with a time of 19:35 and Freeman placed 84th with a time of 19:37.

Freshman Sophia Anderle (Peabody, Massachusetts/Peabody Veterans Memorial) also took on her first-collegiate championship placing 88th in the five-kilometer race with a time of 19:40.

Stonehill takes a week off before taking on the Northeast-10 Conference Championships, which will be hosted by American International College, on Sunday, October 22, at Stanley Park in Westfield, Massachusetts.
