Women’s Cross Country Takes Home Third Title of the Season at 49th Codfish Bowl

Lastra crosses the finish in fifth place as the first Skyhawk

BOSTON, Mass. (September 23, 2017) – The Stonehill College women's cross country team, ranked first in the East Region and 21st nationally by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, finished first at the 49th Codfish Bowl at Franklin Park Saturday afternoon.

The Skyhawks totaled 44 points at the event, while Westfield State University placed second with 103 points and Merrimack College finished third with 104 points. Simmons College took fourth with 149 points, as Phillips Andover rounded out the top five with 153 points.

Sophomore Anna Lastra (Bridgton, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) was the first Skyhawk across the finish line, finishing fifth with a time of 19:46. The Skyhawks ran in three groups at a steady rate to capture the title, as sophomore Kelly Higgins (Weymouth, Massachusetts/Weymouth) took eighth place out of 184 competitors with a time of 20:04. Junior Jackie Cutillo (Foxboro, Massachusetts/Bishop Feehan) rounded out the top ten for the Skyhawks, as she placed 10th with a time of 20:12 in the five-kilometer race.

Junior Makenzie Cyr (Douglas, Massachusetts/Douglas) followed Cutillo in 11th place, crossing the finish line with a time of 20:12. Junior Isabel Baker (Charlestown, Rhode Island/Chariho) clocked in at 20:23, good for 13th place, while senior Abby Hersom (Rockland, Maine/Oceanside) and junior Elizabeth Hannon (Franklin, Massachusetts/Bishop Feehan) finished back-to-back in 15th and 16th place, respectively. Hersom and Hannon clocked in at 20:25.

Freshman Sam Curtin (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North) was the next Skyhawk to cross the finish line with a time of 20:27, good for 18th place. Sophomore Alyssa Freeman (Billerica, Massachusetts/Billerica) finished 23rd with a time of 20:34, as freshman Sophia Anderle (Peabody, Massachusetts/Peabody Veterans Memorial) clocked in one second after Freeman with a time of 20:35, good for 24th.

Sophomore Jordan Callahan (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North) placed 28th with a time of 20:41, as freshman Sarah Cavanaugh (Auburn, Massachusetts/Auburn) took 31st and was the final Skyhawk to cross the finish line with a time of 20:47.

Stonehill looks to best its eighth-place result at last year's New England Championship on Saturday, October 7 at Franklin Park in Boston, Massachusetts.
