No. 13 Women's Cross Country Captures Skyhawk Preview Meet Title

EASTON, Mass. (September 3, 2016) - The No. 13 Stonehill women's cross country team, opened its 2016 season with a title at its own Skyhawk Preview Meet Saturday morning. 

Stonehill, ranked first in the East Region by the U.S. Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA) Preseason Division II Poll, placed all five of its scoring runners inside the top-10 en route to a score of 34, while also placing seven of its 18 runners inside the top-20.

Fellow Northeast-10 Conference members Assumption College (44 points) and American International College (105) finished second and third, respectively. Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference member Kutztown University (117) tallied a fourth-place mark, while Merrimack College (119), Southern New Hampshire University (150), and Adelphi University (150) rounded out the final three in the seven-team field.

The Skyhawks was led by senior Nicole Borofski (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) who paced the pack with a 18:04 five-kilometer course. Classmate Alexandra Buonfiglio (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield) crossed the finish line with a time of 19:09, recording a sixth-place mark.

Junior Emily Knox (Worcester, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) followed in eighth place, as sophomore Makenzie Cyr (Douglas, Mass./Douglas) and freshman Danika Wayss (Warwick, R.I./Pilgrim) rounded out the top-10. Knox and Cyr clocked in a time of 19:13, while Wayss crossed the line at 19:19 for her debut in a Stonehill uniform. 

Also competing for the Skyhawks was freshman Jordan Callahan (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North), who finished 18th at a 19:58 5k pace and sophomore Jackie Cutillo (Foxboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan) who crossed the line at 19:58 for a 19th-place finish. 

Stonehill will be off next weekend before returning to action on Friday, September 16 at the National Catholic Championship, hosted by the University of Notre Dame and Saturday, September 17 at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational.
