No. 18 Women's Cross Country Posts Runner-Up Finish At Shacklette Invitational

Freshman Mackenzie Cyr leads the way, placing third in 19:05

MANCHESTER, N.H. (September 5, 2015) – The Stonehill College women's cross country team, ranked No. 18 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II Preseason Poll, posted a runner-up finish today at the season-opening Shacklette Invitational on the campus of Saint Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Stonehill, which entered four freshmen and one sophomore among its six runners today, finished with a score of 59, just three points behind the University of New England. Fellow Northeast-10 Conference members American International College (84 points), Assumption College (100) and Merrimack College (125) rounded out the top-five of the eight-team field.

Running in her first collegiate race, freshman Makenzie Cyr (Douglas, Massachusetts/Douglas) had an impressive debut, finishing third overall out of nearly 120 participants with a time of 19:05 on the five-kilometer course. Only Tiana Thomas and Brittney Sorbello, a pair of juniors from the University of New England, finished faster than Cyr.

Classmate Jackie Cutillo (Foxboro, Massachusetts/Bishop Feehan) also made the most of her collegiate debut, placing seventh and clocking in at 19:17. Freshman Jillian Caiazzi (Marlborough, Massachusetts/Marlborough) followed Cutillo in 14th place with a time of 19:38, while junior Alexandra Grimaldo (Marlborough, Massachusetts/Marlborough) turned in a time of 19:40, good for 15th overall.

Rounding out Stonehill's five scoring runners was sophomore Abby Hersom (Rockland, Maine/Oceanside), who placed 20th in 19:48. Freshman Anna Devitto (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Pembroke) was the final Skyhawk to cross the finish line, doing so in 19:57, good for 21st.

Stonehill will be off next weekend before returning to action on September 19th at the Kutztown Division II/Division III Challenge, hosted by Kutztown University in Pennsylvania.
