Berkowicz Named NE-10 Rookie of the Week

Freshman finished second overall in collegiate debut

EASTON, Mass. (September 10, 2012) – Stonehill College freshman Julia Berkowicz (Woodstock, Conn./Whitinsville Christian) has been named the Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) women's cross country Rookie of the Week, it was announced earlier today.

Berkowicz shined in her collegiate debut as she finished second overall on the 5-kilometer course at the Shacklette Invitational in 19 minutes and 34.5-seconds. Berkowicz' second place finish helped the Skyhawks sweep the top-3 spots in the race to win the 31st annual Shacklette Invitational for the second-straight season.

Berkowicz joins the Stonehill College women's cross country team after a standout four-year career at Whitinsville Christian. Berkowicz, a four-year letterwinner in cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field, was named a DVC League All-Star in all three sports from freshman to senior season. She also helped set the 4x800-meter school record as a freshman and was named the DVC Runner of the Year as a junior and a senior.

Also during her junior season, Berkowicz set the school record and qualified for indoor nationals in the 1,000-meter run while earning All-State honors and a Telegram All-Star honor. Berkowicz also qualified for indoor nationals during her senior season and earned All-State honors in the one mile run (outdoor track). For her efforts, Berkowicz was named the Senior Athlete of the Year.

Stonehill, ranked 23th overall in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCCA) Division II preseason poll, returns to action on Saturday, September 15 at the Minuteman Invitational hosted by University of Massachusetts at noon.
