#21 Stonehill Places 24th at New England Championships

Alves leads Skyhawks with 107th place finish out of 322 runners

DORCHESTER, Mass. (October 9, 2010) – Stonehill College, ranked 21st in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II national poll and first in the East Region, turned in a 24th place finish at the New England Cross Country Championships at Franklin Park today.

Stonehill posted 667 points to finish 24th out of 47 programs at the event overall, but first among Division II teams at the Championship which features New England programs in all three divisions. Boston College took four of the top five spots overall to win the team title with a score of 26, while the University of Connecticut placed second with 116 points. University of Maine junior Corey Connor took the individual title for the second-straight year as she completed the five-kilometer course in 16:54.

Junior captain Jill Alves (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hanson) led Stonehill as she placed 107th out of 322 runners overall by completing the course in 19:21 – good for second among Division II runners. Junior Kristen Mahoney (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) finished 110th (fourth in DII) with her time of 19:23, while freshman Emily Regan (Hanson, Mass./Whitman-Hanson) took 126th (6th DII) in 19:32 – first among Division II freshmen.

Stonehill is back in action Saturday, October 23, when it participates in the Kutztown University Division II Challenge, in Kutztown, Pa., at 10 a.m.
