Volleyball Takes Two from Mercy and Assumption

Russell tallied 31 digs in two matches including a career high 21 against Mercy

EASTON, Massachusetts (September 15, 2019) – The Stonehill College volleyball team defeated Mercy College, 3-1, and Assumption College, 3-0, to wrap up the Skyhawk Invitational on Sunday in Merkert Gymnasium.

Match 1: Stonehill 3 – Mercy 1
Stonehill saw sophomore Abby Remick tally a career high 21 kills with a .333 hitting percentage, while freshman Amanda Maier notched 15 kills and Clare Feeman also recorded double-digit kills with 10. Sophomore Carly Russell recorded a career high 21 digs.

The two teams battled back and forth in the first set, until the Skyhawks went on a 14-8 rally to see its largest lead of the game of eight, 22-14, before taking set one, 25-19.

The Skyhawks were up by seven, 12-5, in the second frame and with a 15-7 run, the Mavericks bounced back to be up by one, 20-19. There were three more tied scores before Mercy secured their first game, 25-23.

Stonehill saw its highest hitting percentage of .447 in the third set, while the Skyhawks also saw one of Maier's three aces in the third frame. The Skyhawks led throughout the frame with their largest lead of nine early in the set, 11-2, eventually scoring five-straight points for a 25-17 win.

In the fourth frame, Mercy held its lone one-point lead early in the game, 2-1, before Stonehill used a .300 hitting percentage to defeat non-conference foe Mercy, 25-18.  

Match 2: Stonehill 3 – Assumption 0

Freshmen Basia Peragine and Maier each tallied 11 kills to lead the match, as senior Rachel Dunlavy and Russell registered 22 and 10 digs, respectively.

Assumption outhit Stonehill in the first set as the Greyhounds averaged a .250 hitting percentage and the Skyhawks combined for a .220 hitting clip, but Stonehill came up on top 25-20.

The second game saw the most tied scores and lead changes in the match with seven and five, respectively, throughout the frame. After the final tie of the game, 17-17, the Skyhawks went on an 8-3 run to take set two, 25-20.

Stonehill's .382 hitting percentage was enough in the third set, as Assumption only saw the lead once, 2-1, and the Skyhawks won the game with a score of 25-19.

Stonehill travels to East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania for four matches as they compete in the NE10/CACC/PSAC Challenge, hosted by East Stroudsburg University at Koehler Fieldhouse from Friday, September 20 to Saturday, September 21. The Skyhawks face Caldwell University and the host on day one at 5:00 and 7:00 p.m., followed by Jefferson University and West Chester (Pa.) University at 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. on day two.
