EASTON, Massachusetts (September 14, 2019) – The Stonehill College volleyball team fell to the University of Pittsburgh Johnstown, 3-1, Saturday morning at Merkert Gymnasium with set scores of 26-28, 28-30, 26-24, and 20-25 in their home opener.
Stonehill's (3-1) freshman Basia Peragine led the team with 12 kills, while junior Sophia Poveda and sophomore Clare Feeman each tallied 10 kills. Poveda also notched her ninth career double-double, adding 17 digs in the match. Sophomore Lauren Wilke registered her 12th double-double of her career picking up 47 assists for a season high and 15 digs.
Pitt-Johnstown saw their highest hitting percentage of the match in the first set, as they averaged 0.323, compared the Stonehill's 0.143 hitting clip. The Mountain Cats lead by six, their largest difference, 21-15, before Stonehill came from behind with an 11-4 rally to take back the lead, 26-25. Stonehill was unable to defend as Pitt-Johnstown took the first game, 28-26.
The Skyhawks opened the second game with a five-point advantage, 12-7, but the Mountain Cats bounced back and ran with the lead for the rest of the set. Stonehill forced the game into extra points by holding on to a tight margin, but falling 30-28.
Stonehill was able to take the third game, 26-24, as they started with a five-point advantage, 14-9. Pitt-Johnstown tied up the set five times, before Stonehill saw back-to-back-kills from Poveda and Feeman to cut the deficit to one, 2-1.
Most of the fourth game went back and forth, until the Mountain Cats went on a 16-7 run to take the match, 3-1, with a 25-20 fourth set.
Stonehill hosts Mercy College tomorrow, Sunday, September 15 at 10:00 a.m. and Assumption College at 5:30 p.m. to wrap up the Skyhawks Invitational at Merkert Gymnasium.
