Volleyball Dominates in 3-0 Victory Over Caldwell

Burgess recorded a career high 10 kills in the season opener


Dunlavy tallies a game high 14 digs

CALDWELL, New Jersey (September 6, 2019) – The Stonehill College volleyball team defeated Caldwell University, 3-0, with set scores of 25-19, 26-24, and 25-10 Friday night at the Newman Center in the season opener.

The Skyhawks (1-0) saw sophomore Shannon Burgess tally a career high 10 kills, while junior Sophia Poveda and sophomore Clare Feeman registered nine kills each. Sophomore Lauren Wilke led the match with 29 assists, while senior Rachel Dunlavy also led the match with 14 digs.

The first set was tied four times, 8-8, before the Skyhawks ran with the lead and didn't give up more than two-straight points from the Cougars. Stonehill saw its largest lead of six, 24-18, right before taking the frame, 25-19 with Burgess' seventh kill of the game.

Stonehill quickly went up seven points, 15-8 in the second set, but with a 12-3 run, Caldwell bounced back with their first lead of the game, 20-18. The Skyhawks regained momentum to take back control, 23-21, but the Cougars tied the set, 24-24, before Stonehill closed out the set with back-to-back points, 26-24.

Stonehill held a 17-4 advantage before letting up more than one-straight point from Caldwell, 17-7. With a 7-3 run. The Skyhawks closed out their first match of the season with a set win of 25-10.

Stonehill plays in two non-conference matches tomorrow, Saturday, September 7 with its first against Bloomfield College at 11:00 a.m., followed by the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia at 1:00 p.m., hosted by the Bears.
