Le Moyne Wins Five-Set Thriller Over Volleyball

Stonehill forces its first game five of the season on senior day


Wilke notched 50 assists and 10 digs for her ninth match tallying a double-double

EASTON, Massachusetts (October 27, 2018) – The Stonehill College volleyball team forced its first fifth set match of the season against Northeast-10 Conference foe Le Moyne College, as the Dolphins won its third-straight match, 3-2, Saturday afternoon at Merkert Gymnasium with set scores of 25-17, 22-25, 25-20, 20-25, 19-17.

For the Skyhawks (10-10, 6-6 NE10), four tallied double-digit kills including Sophia Poveda with 15, Allyson Hughes with 15 kills, Abby Remick with 14 kills, and Megan Pennino with 10 kills. Junior Rachel Dunlavy tallied her 16th match with double-digit digs this season, totaling 20, while freshman Lauren Wilke recorded her ninth match of the season with a double-double totaling 50 assists and 10 digs.

The Dolphins saw its highest hitting percentage of the match in the first set, with a .367 hitting clip. The Skyhawks saw its first lead of the match with a three-point advantage, 4-1, but the Dolphins quickly flipped the switch and went on a 10-2 run that gave them a five-point lead, 11-6. Stonehill was able to come within three, 12-9, but Le Moyne continued with the momentum and finished the game with an eight-point advantage, 25-17.

Le Moyne held the lead for most of the second game, before Stonehill came within four and ran with eight-straight points that Remick served to put the Skyhawks up by three, 24-21. After a Skyhawk error, the Dolphins also registered an error to secure Stonehill's first victory, 25-22.

The third game went back and forth as Stonehill and Le Moyne saw their smallest deficit of one, as the Skyhawks tried to fight back but closed the gap to four, 20-24, but the Dolphins came up on top for a 25-20 victory leading the match 2-1.

Stonehill held the advantage for most of the fourth game and Le Moyne only saw a lead in the beginning of the set, a two-point advantage, 6-4. The Dolphins tied the game at seven, 7-7, but the Skyhawks drove the set home with a 25-20 victory to tie the match up at two games apiece, forcing their first five-set match of the season.

Stonehill saw its highest hitting percentage of the match in the fifth set, .333, as Le Moyne also averaged a .333 hitting clip. Ten tied scores occurred in the fifth game and the Skyhawks held the advantage until late in the final set, 17-16, but the Dolphins scored three-straight points to earn the five-set victory for their third-straight win.

Stonehill wraps up its regular season schedule with two matches away from Merkert Gymnasium taking on Adelphi University on Friday, November 2 at 7:00 p.m. and Pace University on Saturday, November 3 at 1:00 p.m. Also, during the month of October, the Skyhawks will be collecting donations for the Side-Out Foundation to help fund breast cancer education and cutting edge research and treatment.
