Skyhawks take first set against the Golden Knights but unable to fight past

EASTON, Massachusetts (October 23, 2018) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball was defeated in four sets, 3-1, by Northeast-10 Conference rival the College of Saint Rose on Saturday, October 26 at Merkert Gymnasium with set scores of 25-22, 16-25, 22-25, and 19-25.
For the Skyhawks (10-9, 6-5 NE10), Allyson Hughes (Modesto, California/Big Valley Christian) led the team with 11 kills, as Megan Pennino (Wantagh, New York/Wantagh) was next in line with 10 kills. Sophomore Sophia Poveda (Miami, Florida/Westminster Christian School) registered 15 digs and three aces to lead the match, while freshman Carly Russell (Warrensburg, Missouri/Warrensburg) contributed 13 digs. Junior Rachel Dunlavy (Brighton, Michigan/Father Gabriel Richard) tallied her 15th match with double-digit digs this season, totaling 22 for a career high, while senior Ruby Moreland (Minneapolis, Minnesota/Hopkins) matched her career-high of four blocks for the fourth time in her career.
Stonehill kicked off the match with a one-point advantage in the first set, 3-2, but Saint Rose quickly gained momentum with an 11-8 lead. The Skyhawks tied up the frame twice, 12-12, as they scored six-straight points to open the lead to five, in favor of Stonehill, 17-12. Stonehill did not let Saint Rose get ahead in the remaining points, as they tried to fight back with a 10-6 run, 22-23. Stonehill closed the frame with two points taking the first game 25-22.

The second set saw the Golden Knights' highest hitting percentage of the night, .393, as the Skyhawks saw its second best hitting clip, .129. Stonehill held onto a one point lead, 4-3, but Saint Rose scored nine-straight points to take an eight-point lead, 12-4. The Skyhawks came within four, 14-10, but the Golden Knights finished the frame with an 11-6 lead for a 25-16 first set victory, tying the match at one a piece.
Stonehill quickly went down in the third set, as the Pioneers saw a nine-point advantage, 14-5, and Stonehill came within one, 21-22, before the Skyhawks could find any tempo and the Pioneers withstood Stonehill, 25-22.
LIU Post fell 2-0 in the fourth game, 0-2, but scored six-straight points for a four-point advantage under Tina Ceriello's serve, 6-2. Following the run, neither team was able to go on another one as play toggled back and forth and Stonehill saw one two-point run while the Pioneers registered the final two points of the game, 25-19, for match point.
Stonehill will host its final regular season home match of the season tomorrow, Saturday, October 27 against Le Moyne College with a start time of 2:00 p.m., as the Skyhawks will recognize their three seniors prior to the match.
