Volleyball Bounces Back Against Southern N.H., 3-1

Wilke tallied her eighth match of the season with a double-double, registereding 23 assists and 12 digs

EASTON, Massachusetts (October 23, 2018) – The Stonehill College volleyball team got ahead early with a 2-0 lead, as Southern New Hampshire University cut the deficit to one, before the Skyhawks defeated the Penmen 3-1 Tuesday night in Merkert Gymnasium in Northeast-10 Conference play with set scores of 25-17, 25-15, 19-25,and 25-19.

For the Skyhawks (10-8, 6-4 NE10), Sophia Poveda and Allyson Hughes led the team with 11 kills each, as Poveda tallied her sixth-career double-double notching 15 digs, while also chipping in a four aces, matching her career high. Junior Rachel Dunlavy tallied her 14th match with double-digit digs this season, totaling 19, while senior Ruby Moreland matched her career-high of four blocks for the third time in her career, as she also chipped in seven kills. Freshman Lauren Wilke recorded her eighth match of the season with a double-double totaling 23 assists and 12 digs.

The Penmen tallied the first three-points of the match for a quick 3-0 lead in the first set and only hung on for a one-point advantage, 6-5, before the Skyhawks tied the frame for the second time, 6-6 and ran with the lead. Stonehill saw its largest lead of 11, 24-13, and Southern New Hampshire went on a four-point run, 24-17, to try and close the gap, but the Penmen closed the set with a bad serve to give Stonehill a 25-17 win.


Poveda recorded her sixth-career double-double with 11 kills and 15 digs

Stonehill saw its highest hitting percentage of the match in the second set, as the Skyhawks averaged a .342 hitting clip, while defending the Penmen with their .182 hitting percentage. Stonehill once again extended its lead to double-digits, 10, late in the set with a 24-14 score, taking the second frame 25-15.

Stonehill started off with the advantage in the third game, 10-6, but the Penmen closed the gap with an 8-4 run, 15-14, for a one-point lead in favor of Southern New Hampshire. The Skyhawks were able to tie the game two more times, 16-16, but with a 9-3 run, the Penmen were able to cut the deficit to one, 2-1, with a game three score of 25-19.

Play toggled back and forth in the fourth set until the Skyhawks began to pull away after a two-point lead, 12-10. A 10-5 run, in favor of Stonehill opened up the game 22-15 and Southern New Hampshire tried to fight back by closing the deficit to four, 23-19, before the Skyhawks closed the match with back-to-back kills for a 25-19 fourth-set victory.

Stonehill continues its three-game homestand with its second game of the week, hosting the College of Saint Rose on Friday, October 26 in Merkert Gymnasium with a 7:00 p.m. start time.
