Poveda led the Skyhawks with 11 kills, Feeman contributed three aces and four blocks

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut (October 19, 2018) – The Stonehill College volleyball team picked up the pace in the  back three sets, as Southern Connecticut State University (13-12, 6-4 NE10) defeated the Skyhawks 3-1 in Northeast-10 Conference play Friday night in Pelz Gymnasium with set scores of 17-25, 23-25, 25-18, 23-25.

For the Skyhawks (9-8, 5-4 NE10), Sophia Poveda (Miami, Florida/Westminster Christian School) led the team with 11 kills and 16 digs, for her fifth-career double-double, while also chipping in two aces. Junior Rachel Dunlavy (Brighton, Michigan/Father Gabriel Richard) and freshman Carly Russell (Warrensburg, Missouri/Warrensburg) each tallied 16 digs, for Russell's season high, while freshman Abby Remick (Chepachet, Rhode Island/Ponaganset) notched 10 kills. Freshman setter Lauren Wilke (Blue Point, New York/Bayport-Blue Point) tallied her seventh double-double of the season with 30 assists and a match-high 18 digs. Sophomore Jessica Givens (Albuquerque, New Mexico/St. Pius X) led the team in aces, as she registered four of the Skyhawks 11.

Stonehill took the first lead of the match and was able to hold on for a one-point advantage, 8-7, before Southern Connecticut scored three-straight points for a 10-8 lead. The Skyhawks looked to fight back with three-straight points after a three-point deficit, 13-13, but the Owls ran with a 12-4 run to take set one, 25-17, with their highest hitting percentage of the match, .257.

The Owls got out to a six-point lead, 8-2, in the second frame, but the Skyhawks saw a 7-1 run to knot the game at nine, 9-9. Southern Connecticut was determined to take the solid lead once again and opened up advantage with their own 6-2 run, 15-11, but Stonehill came within one again, 15-16. After another four-point lead, 19-15, Southern Connecticut lost touch as Stonehill came within one once again, 19-20, with one of Givens' four aces of the game. The Owls were able to secure the second set, 25-23, after the Skyhawks came within one, 23-24, one more time.

Southern Connecticut continued the rally into the third set as it saw a one-point lead through most of the first set, 13-12, but Stonehill tied the game six times, 13-13, before taking its first lead, 17-13. The Owls ran with four-straight points to tie the set for the seventh time, 17-17, but the Skyhawks finished the frame with an 8-1 run to take its first game, 25-18.

A seven-point advantage kicked off the fourth game in the Owl's favor, 8-1, and the Skyhawks came within four, 7-11, after errors by Southern Connecticut. The Owls opened the frame once again, this time to eight points, 16-8, and the Skyhawks came within one, 15-16, for the first time all set with a seven-point serving run by Feeman. Stonehill had a one-point deficit two more scores before tying the game for the first time, 20-20, and saw its first lead of the set, 21-20. Southern Connecticut fought back with a 5-2 run to take its third-straight win, 25-23.

Stonehill returns to action on Tuesday, October 23 as they host Southern New Hampshire University in a 7:00 p.m. match in Merkert Gymnasium and prior to the match the Skyhawks will host a Team Impact Graduation for teammates Grace and Eva.
