Women’s Volleyball Finishes Strong in 3-1 Win Over Saint Anselm

DeLanty records her fourth-career double double

EASTON, Mass. (October  14, 2017) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball defeated Saint Anselm College, 3-1, in its Dig Pink Match on Saturday afternoon with set scores of 13-25, 25-15, 25-21, 25-19.

Stonehill's (7-10, 4-3 NE10) Katherine DeLanty (Smithtown, New York/Smithtown West) recorded her fourth-career double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs. Claire Manuszak (Indianapolis, Indiana/Bishop Chatard) recorded 17 digs in the victory, while Megan Pennino (Wantagh, New York/Wantagh) totaled six blocks. Junior Allyson Hughes (Modesto, California/Big Valley Christian) added 15 kills, to the Skyhawks' 47.

Saint Anselm's (13-7, 6-2 NE10) Katy Teets recorded 13 kills, while Danielle Isbell totaled 20 digs and three aces and Holly Manchester registered three blocks.

Stonehill fell behind quickly in the first frame with an eight-point lead, 11-3. The Hawks continued extending its lead to 10, 17-7, as the Skyhawks were only able to come within eight, 17-12, with a 5-0 run. Saint Anselm captured the first game with an 8-1 run, for a 25-13 win.

The Skyhawk's biggest hitting percentage came in the second set, as the team combined for a .467 hitting clip compared to the Hawks' .097 hitting percentage. With an ace from Sophia Poveda (Miami, Florida/Westminster Christian School), Stonehill ran with the set while also taking its second lead of the game, 7-6. The Skyhawks took on a 17-9 run, to tie up the match 1-1 with a 25-15 victory.

Saint Anselm fell behind quickly, as Stonehill opened up the third set with a 4-0 lead and kept the lead throughout the frame. Freshman Jessica Givens (Albuquerque, New Mexico/St. Pius X) served for five-straight points, to give Stonehill a seven-point lead, 13-6. Saint Anselm fought back for a three-point deficit, 16-19, but Stonehill had the set-decider with a kill from Marykay Nasby (Belle Plaine, Minnesota/Belle Plaine).

Stonehill once again took an early lead in the fourth set, 8-1, but Saint Anselm scored five-straight points for a 6-8 deficit. The Skyhawks' Givens was again successful serving, dropping her second and third ace, of the set, back-to-back, for a 16-12 advantage. The Hawks and Skyhawks continued to battle in the remaining points of the game, but Stonehill came up on top with a 25-19 win after a kill by DeLanty and a block by DeLanty and Givens.

Stonehill takes a week off before traveling to the University of New Haven for a 1:00 p.m. contest. During the month of October, the Skyhawks will be collecting money for The Side-Out Foundation and its Dig Pink initiative.
