Volleyball Cruises Past Merrimack, 3-0

DeLanty records sixth match this season with double-digit kills

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (September 22, 2017) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball picked up its first Northeast-10 Conference victory by defeating Merrimack College Friday afternoon, 3-0, at Hammel Court.

For Stonehill (4-7, 1-1 NE10), Katherine DeLanty (Smithtown, New York/Smithtown West) recorded 14 kills and four total blocks. Allyson Hughes (Modesto, California/Big Valley Christian) and Megan Pennino (Wantagh, New York/Wantagh) followed Delanty with 10 and seven kills, respectively. Freshman Jessica Givens (Albuquerque, New Mexico/St. Pius X) notched her eighth match this season with 30-plus assists, registering 32 in the win.

Merrimack (2-9, 0-2 NE10), saw Katelynn Marr and Mary Kate McCarroll tally a team-high seven kills apiece, while Christina Nye recorded a team-high nine digs.

Merrimack started the first set strong, as they tied the set twice, 3-3 before Stonehill took a six-point lead, 16-10. The Warriors tried to bounce back, closing the deficit to three, 16-13, but the Skyhawks ran with the momentum and a 9-2 run, 25-15.

Stonehill took an early 17-7 lead in the second frame and Merrimack was able to come within seven, 19-12, with a 5-2 run. They then rallied the score to a five-point deficit, 23-18, before the Skyhawks finished off the game with two-straight points, one from Hughes and the other a Warrior attacking error, 25-18.

The Skyhawks notched a match-high .455 hitting percentage in the third set, totaling 12 kills off of 22 attempts, while the Warriors averaged a .125 hitting clip with nine kills. Once again, Stonehill kicked off the set with high energy and recorded an early 9-6 lead, but was stopped short by the Warriors, as they scored three-straight points, 9-9. The Skyhawks picked up right where they left off and regained the lead with five-straight points, 14-9. Merrimack cut the deficit to four, 19-15, but with a Warrior attack error, the Skyhawks closed out the match with a 6-2 run, taking the third set, 25-17.

Stonehill will battle the University of Bridgeport on Thursday, September 28 at 7:00 p.m. and will recognize their professors at the match for a Professor Appreciation Match.
