Women’s Volleyball Wins Against Holy Family, Falls to NYIT

DeLanty totaled 14 kills and seven blocks

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (September 16, 2017) – The Stonehill women's volleyball team split matches at Recreation Hall in Old Westbury, New York Saturday afternoon, in a trimatch hosted by NYIT.

Match 1: NYIT 3 – Stonehill 0
Stonehill's offense was led by Marykay Nasby (Belle Plaine, Minnesota/Belle Plaine) and Sophia Poveda (Miami, Florida/Westminster Christian School) who each chipped in nine kills, while Allyson Hughes (Modesto, California/Big Valley Christian) notched eight kills. Jessica Givens (Albuquerque, New Mexico/St. Pius X) tallied 31 assists, as Claire Manuszak (Indianapolis, Indiana/Bishop Chatard) recorded 18 digs, good for her fifth match this season with double-digit digs.

The Skyhawks took its first lead of the match, 6-5, and stayed with the Bears, 12-11, until NYIT scored eight-straight points, 19-11. Stonehill came within four, 18-22, but NYIT finished the set with a 3-1 run, taking set point, 25-19.

Stonehill started off the second set with a 7-2 run, but NYIT was quick with taking the lead with a 17-4 run, 19-11. The Skyhawks tallied one last point, as the Bears scored six-straight points, taking the second frame, 25-12.

The Bears recorded a match-best .238 hitting percentage in the third set, compared to the Skyhawks' .133. With four ties and five score changes in the third frame, the bears were able to take the win with a 25-23 set.

Match 2: Stonehill 3 – Holy Family 0
The Skyhawks were led by Katherine DeLanty (Smithtown, New York/Smithtown West) with 11 kills, a .429 hitting percentage, and five blocks. Poveda followed Delanty with 10 kills, a .318 hitting percentage and seven digs. Givens recorded 36 assists

After Holy Family scored off of rally points for a 4-3 lead, Stonehill used a 16-1 rally to give the Skyhawks its first lead, 19-5. The Tigers scored three more points before the Skyhawks took the first frame, 25-8, with its .545 hitting percentage

Stonehill once again got out to an early lead, 7-2, but Holy Family came within four, 10-14 in the second set. The Tigers rallied with a 12-11 run, but the Skyhawks held on to take the second frame, 25-21.

With four ties and three lead changes in the third set, Stonehill's .300 hitting percentage game them the advantage to take its first win in six matches, 25-16.

Stonehill hosts American International College on Tuesday, September 19 in Merkert Gymnasium with a start time of 7:00 p.m.
