Women’s Volleyball Concludes UIndy Invitational With Two Losses

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (September 9, 2017) – The Stonehill women's volleyball team wrapped up play at the UIndy Invitational with a 3-0 loss to Davenport University and a 3-1 loss to Clarion University Saturday afternoon in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Match 1: Davenport University 3 – Stonehill 0
Stonehill's offense was led by Allyson Hughes (Modesto, California/Big Valley Christian) who tallied a team-high nine kills and Marykay Nasby (Belle Plaine, Minnesota/Belle Plaine) who notched four kills, 11 digs, and three blocks.

Stonehill held the lead for most of the first game until the Panthers came within two, 23-21, and went on a 6-2 run to take the first frame, 27-25.  

Davenport took a 4-0 lead in the second game, and extended its lead to nine, 22-13, as Stonehill was only able to come within six, 24-18, with a 5-2 run before the Panthers took the second frame, 25-18.

The third set saw Davenport take a 5-0 lead, but Stonehill fought back to tie the game at seven with a 7-2 rally. The Panthers went on a 19-7 rally to finish the match with a 25-14 win.  

Match 2: Clarion 3 – Stonehill 1

The Skyhawks were led by Hughes with a match-high 15 kills, as Jessica Givens (Albuquerque, New Mexico/St. Pius X) tallied 44 assists and four blocks. Claire Manuszak (Indianapolis, Indiana/Bishop Chatard) noted 23 digs in the match.

Clarion outhit Stonehill in the first game with a .364 hitting percentage, but the Skyhawks fought hard in the frame tying it at 13. The Golden Eagles went on a 12-7 to take the first game from the Skyhawks, 25-20.

Play toggled between the two teams in the beginning of the second game, as Stonehill took its first lead, 10-9. The Golden Eagles rallied with an 8-3 rally, taking the lead back, 18-14. The Skyhawks came within two, 22-24, but Clarion finished the game with a kill by Olivia Olson, 25-22.

With 11 ties, and three lead changes, the Skyhawks fought back after a one-point deficit, 23-24, with three-straight points to take its first set of the Invitational, 26-24.

Clarion jumped ahead in the fourth frame, 5-3, but the Skyhawks came within one multiple times, 8-9. The Golden Eagles extended its lead to nine with its 16-8 run, taking the match 25-16.

Stonehill travels to New York for a tri-match against NYIT and Holy Family University on Saturday, September 16, facing the Bears first at 11:00 a.m. and the Tigers second at 1:00 p.m.
