Women’s Volleyball Drops Two at UIndy Invitational

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (September 8, 2017) – The Stonehill women's volleyball team fell to No.13 Winona State University, 3-0, and the University of Indianapolis, 3-0, Friday in Indianapolis, Indiana at the UIndy Invitational.

Match 1: No. 13 Winona State 3 – Stonehill 0
Stonehill's offense was led by Ashley Hitchcock (Warrenville, Illinois/Benet Academy) who tallied eight kills and seven digs, while Marykay Nasbv (Belle Plaine, Minnesota/Belle Plaine) followed with five kills. Jessica Givens (Albuquerque, New Mexico/St. Pius X) and Katherine DeLanty (Smithtown, New York/Smithtown West) recorded three blocks a piece in the loss.

The Warriors rallied to an eight-point lead in the first set, 12-4, as their match-high .273 attacking percentage helped finish the frame with a 14-point advantage, 25-11.

Stonehill tied the second game for the first time in the match, 2-2, but Winona State quickly climbed to a six point lead, 12-6. The Skyhawks came within five, 9-14, but the Warriors added on an 11-8 rally to take the second frame from Stonehill, 25-17.

The Skyhawks tied the third frame four times, 7-7, but the Warriors quickly jumped ahead with a nine-point advantage, 15-24. Stonehill tried to come back with three-straight points, 18-24, but Winona State finished the match taking the rally point from the Skyhawks, 25-18.

Match 2: Indianapolis 3 – Stonehill 0

The Skyhawks were led by Megan Pennino (Wantagh, New York/Wantagh) who registered a team-high six kills and Claire Manuszak (Indianapolis, Indiana/Bishop Chatard) who recorded 9 digs in the contest, as Nasby notched four blocks in the loss.

The Greyhounds opened up the first game with a 10-point lead, 14-4, and the Skyhawks fought to close the gap with only a seven-point deficit, 10-17. Indianapolis went on a 8-1 rally to take game one, 25-11.

With its highest hitting percentage of the night, Indianapolis dominated the second game with a .444 hitting clip, totaling 15 kills versus Stonehill's five, to take the second frame, 25-13.

The Skyhawks took its first lead of the day in the third frame, 4-1, as the Greyhounds rebounded scoring four-straight points to take the lead, 5-4. Stonehill tied the game at five, 5-5, but Indianapolis ran with a 12-3 run, 17-8, before the Skyhawks closed the gap to eight, 17-9. Play toggled between the two teams for the remainder of the game, as the Greyhounds came up on top once again, 25-16, to take match point.

Stonehill plays in the second day of the UIndy Invitational tomorrow, with its first contest at 10:00 a.m. verses Davenport University and the second one against Clarion University at 4:00 p.m.
