Women’s Volleyball Earns a 3-1 Victory Over Southern Connecticut State

Nasby leads the Skyhawks with match-high 16 kills

NEW HAVEN, Mass. (November 4, 2016) – The Stonehill women's volleyball team came back after dropping the third set to top Southern Connecticut State University, 3-1 Friday night at the Pelz Gymnasium. The Skyhawks' victory came by set scores of 25-18, 25-23, 13-25, and 25-21.

Stonehill's (11-12, 6-6 NE-10) junior Marykay Nasby (Belle Plaine, Minn./Belle Plaine) recorded a match-high 14 kills, while sophomore Allyson Hughes (Modesto, Calif./Big Valley Christian) tallied 12 kills in the afternoon. For the third-straight match, there were multiple Skyhawks in double-digit digs, including Ashley Hitchcock (Warrenville, Ill./Benet Academy) with 14 and 10 kills for her third double-double of the season. Taylor Stevens (Foster, R.I./Pontaganset), Claire Manuszak (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard), and Abby Harte (Dover, N.H./Dover) each chipped in 11 digs, while Rachel Dunlavy (Brighton, Mich./Father Gabriel Richard) notched 10 in the victory. Stevens also tallied 43 assists on the night, good for her 11th double-double this season.

Southern Connecticut State (14-17, 4-8 NE-10) saw Leanna Jadus as the only Owl to record double-digit kills with 12, as Tea Carter and Alexandra Nimz registered 19 and 13 assists, respectively.

Stonehill's .282 hitting percentage in the first set was the deciding factor, as Southern Connecticut averaged a .128 hitting clip. The Skyhawks picked up the first set point 25-18.

The Owls saw its first lead of the match in the second set, 2-1, and extended it to four, 15-11. But, the Skyhawks went on a 13-3 run opening up the lead to six, 24-18 in their favor. Southern Connecticut tallied five-straight points before Stonehill picked up the final point, 25-23, taking set two.

The third set saw a .292 hitting clip for the Owls', its highest of the night overpowering the Skyhawks' hitting percentage, as it soared over Stonehill 25-13, cutting the deficit to one, 2-1.

Southern Connecticut opened up the fourth set with a 6-1 run, but Stonehill was able to knot the frame eight times, before its final tie, 19-19. The Skyhawks finished the fourth set with a 6-2 run, taking match point, 25-21.

Stonehill plays in its final regular season conference match away from Merkert Gymnasium on Tuesday, November 8 for a 7:00 p.m. match against Saint Anselm College.
