Women’s Volleyball Falls to Bentley in Five, 3-2

Four Skyhawks reach double-digit kills

Stevens racked up a match-high 50 assists, her second-highest on the season

WALTHAM, Mass. (October 4, 2016) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball team dropped a Northeast-10 Conference match to Bentley University, 3-2 Tuesday night in Waltham, Massachusetts. The Skyhawks fell with set scores of 21-25, 25-21, 25-20, 13-25, 12-15.

Stonehill's (7-6, 2-2 NE-10) junior Ashley Hitchcock (Warrenville, Ill./Benet Academy) and sophomore Allyson Hughes (Modesto, Calif./Big Valley Christian) each tallied a match-high 16 kills apiece. Junior Marykay Nasby (Belle Plaine, Minn./Belle Plaine) and classmate Katherine DeLanty (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) chipped in 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Senior Taylor Stevens (Foster, R.I./ Ponaganset) totaled a match-high 50 assists on the night.

Bentley University (5-11, 3-0 NE-10) also had four student-athletes with double-digit kills including Dani Milner with 16, Shannon Kelly with 15, McKenna Buck with 11, and Lauren Van Buren with 10. The two teams fought back and forth in the first set as a total of 13 tied scores appeared. After the Skyhawks knotted the game at 20, the Falcons went on a 5-1 run to pick up the first set, 25-21.

Stonehill came out running in the second set with a 13-4 run, but Bentley quickly fought back as it would only see lead change and a one-point advantage, 18-17. The Skyhawks would not back down as they were able to close out the frame with an 8-3 run, 25-21.

Stonehill was able to control a large majority of the third set as Bentley saw one lead again, 6-4. The Skyhawks' largest lead of six, 19-13, was just enough to keep the Falcons out of sight as Hitchcock secured the final point putting Stonehill up five for set point, 25-20. 

The Falcons' .346 hitting percentage outmatched the Skyhawks as Bentley was able to tally the fourth frame, 25-13.

Stonehill fell behind early in the deciding set, 3-5, but quickly bounced back and knotted the score three times, 9-9, before a 6-3 run gave Bentley a 15-12 victory.

Stonehill travels to Brookville, New York this weekend for a tri-match versus LIU Post at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 7 and Queens (N.Y.) College at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 8.
