Women’s Volleyball Comes Up On Top Against Saint Michael’s, 3-0, After Third Set Battle

Hughes leads Skyhawks with 15 kills

Sophomore Hughes led the match with 15 kills in Stonehill's second-straight victory

EASTON, Mass. (October 1, 2016) – The Stonehill women's volleyball team fought hard in the third set to sweep Saint Michael's College, 3-0, for a second time this season, Saturday afternoon at the Merkert Gymnasium. The Skyhawks' victory came by set scores of 25-15, 25-19 and 34-32.  

Stonehill's (7-5, 2-1 NE-10) sophomore Allyson Hughes (Modesto, Calif./Big) recorded a match-high 15 kills, while junior Katherine DeLanty (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) tallied her 10th match this season with double-digit kills, registering 10 in the afternoon. Claire Manuszak (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard), Ashley Hitchcock (Warrenville, Ill./Benet Academy) and Rachel Dunlavy (Brighton, Mich./Father Gabriel Richard) each notched double-digit digs with 14, 12 and 11, respectively.

Saint Michael's (2-5, 0-3 NE-10) Gabby Ratte posted a team-high nine kills, while Natalie Moore tallied 17 digs.

Eight ties, five lead changes and a 10-0 run gave Stonehill the first set point with a 25-15 frame.

Stonehill's .297 hitting percentage was the highest of the afternoon, which outlasted Saint Michael's .194 clip in the second set, putting the Skyhawks up 2-0 with a 25-19 win.

In the third set, Stonehill kept the lead until the Purple Knights' Ratte tallied an ace for their first lead of the set, 23-22. The Skyhawks posted two points, as Saint Michael's recorded two of its own, 25-24. The two teams battled back and forth until Stonehill notched three-straight points for a 32-34 advantage.

Stonehill travels to Bentley University on Tuesday, October 4 for a 7 p.m. Northeast-10 Conference matchup.
