Women’s Volleyball Finishes Strong in 3-1 Win Over NYIT

DeLanty registers career-high 19 kills in victory

EASTON, Mass. (September 17, 2016) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball team jumped out early, 2-0, and came back from behind to earn a 3-1 victory over NYIT in its final contest of its five-match homestand Saturday afternoon at the Merkert Gymnasium. The win came with set scores of 25-18, 25-21, 21-25, 25-22.

Stonehill's (5-4) offense was led by junior Katherine DeLanty (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) who recorded a career- and match-high 19 kills, while junior Marykay Nasby (Belle Plain, Minn./Belle Plain) and sophomore Allyson Hughes (Modesto, Calif./Big Valley Christian) each chipped in 11 kills. The Skyhawk's defense was also dominant in the win tallying 14 blocks to the Bear's 11.

NYIT (9-1) had two student-athletes in double-digit kills, including Tiffany Verni with 16 and Karolina Moderova with 12.

The first set toggled as it was knotted 11 times and the lead was changed six times. With a block by Megan Pennino (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) and Nasby, 17-17, that rallied Stonehill to close out the first set, the Skyhawks went on a 9-1 rally winning 25-18.

Stonehill did not give up the lead in the second set, as the Bears would get within one, 19-20, but only before Stonehill would finish the from with a 5-2 run, 25-21.

NYIT got out to an early lead in the third set, 12-9, as Stonehill tried to fight back but its .044 hitting percentage was not enough as the Bears averaged a .231 hitting clip, to give them its first set point, 25-21.

The fourth set was pretty even as NYIT averaged a .152 hitting percentage and Stonehill averaged .173 for the frame. Both teams once again saw a lead at some point of the frame, until a 9-2 run, 25-22, drove the Skyhawks home to secure match point, 3-1.

Stonehill travels to American International College on Friday, September 23  for its first Northeast-10 Conference battle this season with a start time of  7 p.m. Springfield, Massachusetts.
