Women’s Volleyball Opens Up Skyhawks Invitational By Blanking Saint Michael’s, 3-0

EASTON, Mass. (September 8, 2016) – The Stonehill women's volleyball team downed Saint Michael's College, 3-0, by set scores of 25-20, 25-23, and 25-19 in Friday night's match of the Skyhawks Invitational at the Merkert Gymnasium.  

Stonehill (2-3) junior Katherine DeLanty (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) recorded her fourth-of-five matches with double-digit kills (12), while classmate Marykay Nasby (Belle Plaine, Minn/Belle Plaine) chipped in nine kills in the victory.

Saint Michael (0-1) Gabby Ratte registered eight kills for a team-high, as Natalie Moore registered 21 digs on the night.

Stonehill never gave up the lead in the first frame, as its largest lead was five, 23-18. The Purple Knights came within one, 17-18, late in the first set, but the Skyhawks were able to go on a 7-3 run to close out the frame.

Saint Michael's came into the second set with a strong start as the Purple Knights took a 10-9 lead. The Skyhawks later went on a 6-0 run, to put Stonehill on top, 15-10, but Saint Michael's would persist going off on a 8-0 run, 20-17. Stonehill regained its strength as it closed out the frame with a 8-3 run, taking the second game, 25-23.

The Purple Knights opened the third set with a 7-4, but the Skyhawks found a rhythm as they went on a 9-2 run to tally its first lead of the set, 13-9. A kill by Nasby would begin Stonehill's 12-6 run to victory, closing out the match 25-19.

Stonehill will play Felician University in its second match of the Skyhawks Invitational at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 10 and Dominican (N.Y.) College at 7 p.m. at the Merkert Gymnasium.
