Delia Phillips leads Stonehill with 12 kills on senior day
EASTON, Mass. (November 7, 2015) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball team defeated Southern Connecticut State University on senior day in three-straight sets, 3-0, by scores of 25-15, 25-21 and 25-22 in Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) action today at Merkert Gymnasium.
Before the match, senior captains and outside hitters Delia Phillips (St. James, New York/Smithtown East) and Kelsey Weymouth (North Attleboro, Massachusetts/North Attleboro) were honored along with senior defensive specialist Meaghan Martin (Mattapoisett, Massachusetts/Medway) for their contributions towards the Stonehill College women's volleyball program.
The Skyhawks received double-digit kill efforts from three different players with Phillips and sophomore right-side hitter Marykay Nasby (Belle Plaine, Minnesota/Belle Plaine) tying for the team-lead in putaways with 12 on the afternoon.
Sophomore Ashley Hitchcock (Warrenville, Illinois/Benet Academy) turned in her second double-double of the season on 11 kills and ten digs. Junior setter Taylor Stevens (Foster, Rhode Island/Ponaganset) dished out 38 assists, compiled five digs, two service aces and two block assists, while sophomore libero Claire Manuszak (Indianapolis, Indiana/Bishop Chatard) posted a match-high 14 digs to go along with one assist and a service ace.
For Southern Connecticut State, junior middle blocker Faith Ford (New Britain, Connecticut/New Britain), senior outside hitter Kelly Gunneson (Cheshire, Connecticut/Cheshire) and sophomore middle blocker Sean Taylor (Kent, Washington/Kentlake) led the Falcons in kills with five a piece. Freshman setter Alexandra Nimz ( Littleton, Colorado/Thunderridge) recorded 16 assists, eight digs and one service ace.
Southern Connecticut State struggled in the opening two sets, hitting .143 in the first and .069 in the second, allowing Stonehill to capitalize and gain a 2-0 advantage. The Owls didn't fare much better in the third frame, hitting -.083, but Stonehill struggled as well, hitting a three set low of .073. Southern Connecticut State pulled even at 21 on a handling error by Stevens forcing the Skyhawks into a timeout. Out of the timeout Stonehill rattled off three consecutive points to take a 24-21 lead, and a kill from Nasby gave the Skyhawks the set, 25-22, and the match, 3-0.
Stonehill (11-14, 5-8 NE-10) will wrap up its regular season next Saturday, November 14th, when they hit the road to visit the University of New Haven for a start time of 6 p.m. Southern Connecticut State (6-25, 1-13 NE-10) returns home to take on Concordia College for an out of conference match at 7 p.m.
