Delanty, Phillips lead Skyhawks with ten kills each

EASTON, Mass. (October 6, 2015) – Senior outside hitter Delia Phillips (St. James, New York/Smithtown East) and sophomore middle blocker Katherine DeLanty (Smithtown, New York/Smithtown West) recorded ten kills each, but Stonehill College fell to Bentley University, 3-1 (25-21, 18-25, 25-16, 25-17) this evening in Northeast-10 Conference volleyball action at Merkert Gymnasium.

With her ten kills, Phillips is now within four of 1000 for her career. The two-time American Volleyball Coaches Association All-East Region selection has totaled 996 kills in 101 career matches, averaging 2.90 per set.

DeLanty added four blocks (one solo) on the defensive end, while classmate Marykay Nasby (Belle Plaine, Minnesota/Belle Plaine) finished with eight kills and four digs.

Junior setter Taylor Stevens (Foster, Rhode Island/Ponaganset), who was named the NE-10 Setter of the Week yesterday, surpassed the 1000-assist mark for her career with 43 tonight. Stevens has turned in four straight 40+ assist efforts and six in her last seven matches.

Defensively, sophomore libero Claire Manuszak (Indianapolis, Indiana/Bishop Chatard) led the way with 20 digs, while sophomore Ashley Hitchcock (Warrenville, Illinois/Benet Academy) added 12.

Sophomore outside hitter Shannon Kelly (Hyde Park, New York/Franklin D. Roosevelt) paced the Bentley attack with a match-high 11 kills to go with 14 digs for the only double-double of the contest.

Senior outside hitter Jaci Buscher (Lakewood, Colorado/Green Mountain) finished with nine kills and nine digs, while freshman setter Krista Campbell (Newtown, Pennsylvania/Council Rock North) handed out 33 assists for the Falcons.

Bentley claimed a tight opening set by four points, but Stonehill was able to build up an early 12-6 advantage in the second frame. The Skyhawks eventually extended their lead to nine (18-9) on a kill by freshman Rubysummer Lord-Moreland (Minneapolis, Minnesota/Hopkins), and evened the match with a 25-18 victory.

Tied at ten in the third set, Bentley took control with a 7-2 run and never looked back. The Skyhawks got as close as four (18-14), but the Falcons closed out the frame to move to within one set of victory.

Needing a fourth frame win to extend the match, Stonehill scored the first point on a Bentley service error, but the Falcons again took command with a 6-0 run. The visitors maintained at least a three-point advantage the rest of the way, closing out the contest with a 25-17 win.

Stonehill (7-8, 2-3 NE-10) and Bentley (10-6, 3-1 NE-10) will both be back in action with NE-10 matches on Saturday. The Skyhawks host Adelphi University at 1 p.m., while the Falcons return to Waltham to take on Saint Michael's College at 5 p.m.
