Sophomore Katherine DeLanty leads Skyhawks with eight kills, four blocks

WATERBURY, Conn. (September 22, 2015) – Playing on the road for the first time in seven matches, the Stonehill College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-10) decision to Post University this evening in non-conference action at the Drubner Center.

Sophomore middle blocker Katherine DeLanty (Smithtown, New York/Smithtown West) led Stonehill with eight kills and four blocks, her fourth consecutive 4+ block effort and seventh overall this season. Senior outside hitter Kelsey Weymouth (North Attleboro, Massachusetts/North Attleboro) recorded seven kills and five digs, while sophomore outside hitter Ashley Hitchcock (Warrenville, Illinois/Benet Academy) added four kills, three digs, and three block assists.

Junior middle hitter Skylar German (Kansas City, Missouri/University of Central Missouri) and senior outside hitter Hailey Griffin (Plainfield, Connecticut/Plainfield) led the Post attack with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Freshman setter Brianna Root (Bristol, Connecticut/Bristol Eastern) dished out a match-high 35 assists, and senior libero Janiellee Alvarez (Norwich, Connecticut/Norwich Technical) totaled nine digs.

Stonehill posted its highest hitting percentage of the match (.241) in the first set, but the Eagles used a late run to earn a five-point victory. Leading 5-4 early, a kill by Root sparked a 5-0 Post run as the home team opened up a 10-4 advantage. The Skyhawks battled back to within two points (16-14), but the Eagles closed the frame on a 7-4 run to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

Trailing 2-0 in the second set, a kill by sophomore outside hitter Marykay Nasby (Belle Plaine, Minnesota/Belle Plaine) and three straight Post attack errors allowed the Skyhawks to take a 4-2 lead. The Eagles won nine of the next 12 points to go up 11-7, but Stonehill responded with a 9-4 run, capped by a DeLanty solo block, to regain a one-point edge (16-15). The set would see six ties after that, including 21-21, before Post won the final four points and took a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Eagles opened the third frame on an 8-0 run and never looked back, posting a 25-10 win to complete their fourth consecutive victory.

Stonehill (6-5, 1-1 NE-10) will look to bounce back on Saturday at 2:30 p.m., when the Skyhawks host LIU Post in non-conference action at Merkert Gymnasium. Post (9-4, 2-0 CACC) hits the road tomorrow night for a conference contest at Felician College.
