Sophomore Marykay Nasby leads Skyhawks with career-high 24 kills

EASTON, Mass. (September 19, 2015) – The Stonehill College volleyball team capped its six-match homestand with a back-and-forth, 3-2 (29-27, 20-25, 21-25, 25-20, 10-15) setback to Saint Anselm College this afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Merkert Gymnasium.

Sophomore outside hitter Marykay Nasby (Belle Plaine, Minnesota/Belle Plaine) led the Skyhawks offensively, hitting .422 with a career-high 24 kills to go with nine digs and two service aces. Nasby, whose previous career-high of 17 came in yesterday's win against Queens College, did not make an error this afternoon until midway through the fourth set.

Senior outside hitter Kelsey Weymouth (North Attleboro, Massachusetts/North Attleboro) recorded her second consecutive double-double and fourth this season with 19 kills and ten digs, while sophomore middle blocker Katherine DeLanty (Smithtown, New York/Smithtown West) added seven kills, five digs, four block assists and three service aces.

Junior setter Taylor Stevens (Foster, Rhode Island/Ponaganset) handed out a season-high 41 assists, her second consecutive 40+ assist effort and the sixth of her career.

Saint Anselm was led by sophomore outside hitter Katy Teets (Dix Hills, New York/Half Hollow Hills West), who hit .297 with 15 kills, eight digs, and five service aces. Freshman setter Jewel Hays (Aliso Viejo, California/Aliso Niguel) recorded a match-high 46 assists to go with 14 digs, six kills and three block assists, while junior Brennah Gladwill (Citrus Heights, California/Oakmont) and sophomore Amanda Williams (North Andover, Massachusetts/Central Catholic) chipped in with 11 kills each.

Trailing 20-16 in the first set, Stonehill rallied to tie the score at 21 before eventually grinding out a 29-27 victory. Saint Anselm answered by taking the second and third frames, but Stonehill held off the Hawks for a 25-20 win in the fourth to force a fifth and final set.

The Skyhawks took an early 2-1 lead in the fifth set on a kill by Weymouth, before the Hawks posted an 8-4 run, forcing Stonehill to take a timeout trailing 9-6. A Nasby kill followed by a service ace from DeLanty brought the Skyhawks back to within a point, but a 4-0 Saint Anselm run forced Stonehill to use another timeout, now trailing 12-8. The teams would split the next four points, and a Skyhawk attack error ended the set and the match in favor of Saint Anselm.

Stonehill (6-4, 1-1 NE-10) will be back in action on Tuesday night with a non-conference contest at Post University, while Saint Anselm (5-5, 1-0 NE-10) is off for a week before traveling to Pace University next Saturday for an afternoon matchup.
