VolleyBlog: Week 13

by Meaghan Lee

This week the Stonehill women's volleyball team made program history by becoming the first co-champions in regular season NE-10 play.  We finished our season with an overall record of 20-6 and a conference record of 11-3.  This is also the first time in NE-10 history that three teams have shared the right as co-champions. Both the University of New Haven and Bentley University also shared the co-champion title with us by having matching conference records.  While it was a long road to get to where we finished our team constantly stayed focused and set small goals to get us to the top of the NE-10.  This week was also a major milestone for our seniors as we got to celebrate our senior night Saturday against The College of Saint Rose.

We started our week with a five-set win over Le Moyne College Friday night. Le Moyne was fighting to keep their season alive this weekend and earn a NE-10 playoff spot, and as a result they took a tight 1st set with a score of 26-24.  The Skyhawks came right back and took the 2nd set convincingly with a score of 25-16.  Le Moyne took the 3rd set 25-22 and the Skyhawks forced a fifth set, taking the 4th with a score of 25-23.  The fifth set was the epitome of a nail biter. Le Moyne got an early lead and was up 5-1, but we came back and tied the score up at 8. The score would be tied 7 more times but ultimately we were victorious, capturing the 19-17 win.

Saturday we were right back in action against The College of Saint Rose.  Before our game all of the seniors were honored and celebrated for their contributions to the program.  The underclassmen and coaches did a fantastic job by surprising us with some funny baby pictures, action shots, and even handmade posters.

Before the start of the game each of the seniors career highlights, statistics, and some of coaches kind words were announced.  The player's families were invited to stand on the end line with them before the start of the game.

On behalf of my fellow seniors, we would like to extend our gratitude to our teammates, coaches, parents, friends, and families.  We could not have made it this far without all of you! Thank you for all of your support, hard work, dedication, and faith in us to make it this far!

We will take on Bentley this Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in the NE-10 semifinal round.
