RINDGE, N.H. (October 11, 2014) – Stonehill College had its season-high seven-match winning streak halted with a 3-1 (25-17, 25-19, 14-25, 25-20) setback at Franklin Pierce University this evening in Northeast-10 Conference volleyball action at the Franklin Pierce Fieldhouse.

Junior outside hitter Kelsey Weymouth (North Attleboro, Massachusetts/North Attleboro) led the Skyhawks with 10 kills, 10 digs, and three block assists, while classmate Delia Phillips (St. James, New York/Smithtown East) registered ten kills and seven digs.

Senior middle blocker Mary-Kate Catton (San Diego, California/Academy of Our Lady of Peace) recorded nine kills, four digs, and three blocks, and freshman Katherine DeLanty (Smithtown, New York/Smithtown West) chipped in with six kills, three digs, and three blocks.

Senior setter Emily Iverson (Elmhurst, Illinois/York) racked up 33 assists, while sophomore Taylor Stevens (Foster, Rhode Island/Ponaganset) finished with eight digs.

Franklin Pierce was led by senior outside hitter Catie Swiderski (Rocky Point, New York/Rocky Point), who posted a solid all-around effort with a match-high 12 kills to go with eight digs, two service aces, and two block assists.

Junior Delia Phillips tallied ten kills and seven digs for the Skyhawks tonight.

Freshman setter Hannah Runge (Deltona, Florida/University) recorded 24 assists and also led all players with 15 digs, while junior libero Catherine Purdy (Ossining, New York/John F. Kennedy Catholic) and sophomore right side hitter Kelsey Hausman (Sandy, Utah/Alta) tallied 14 and 13 digs, respectively.

The Ravens jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Stonehill struggled in the opening frame, hitting just -.118 as a team with six kills and ten errors in 34 attack attempts. Franklin Pierce used early runs of four and five points to build a 10-3 lead, but Stonehill kept the set close with runs of three and four to pull to within two at 14-12. The Ravens got some breathing room when they won the next three points, and never allowed Stonehill to get closer than three after that, eventually winning the set 25-17.

The two teams traded points in the early part of the second frame, but Franklin Pierce took command by winning ten of twelve points following a 9-9 tie to go up 19-11. The Skyhawks were able to keep things interesting, pulling to as close as four (23-19) with a late five point run, but an attack error on Stevens and a kill by Runge ended the frame in Franklin Pierce's favor.

For the second consecutive match, Stonehill dropped the first two sets and stayed alive with a third frame win. After falling behind 9-4, the Skyhawks stormed back to take a 20-10 lead. Franklin Pierce was able to score four more points before consecutive kills by Weymouth sent the match to a fourth set.

Unlike its last match at Saint Anselm, Stonehill was unable to force a fifth set after trailing 2-0. The teams traded runs early and Franklin Pierce held a 15-13 lead midway through the frame. Stonehill kept it close, down only three late (20-17), but the Ravens won three straight points to extend their lead to six (23-17). The Skyhawks made one final push, winning three straight points with kills from Phillips and Weymouth, but Franklin Pierce put the match away on a kill from Hausman followed by an ace from Swiderski.

Stonehill (14-4, 5-1 NE-10) will be back in action next Friday, October 17th, as the Skyhawks are set to host Assumption College at 5:30 p.m. for the annual Dig Pink match in support of breast cancer awareness. Franklin Pierce (11-7, 4-2 NE-10) will hit the road for its next match on Tuesday night at Merrimack College.
