Senior Mary-Kate Catton led Stonehill to a 3-0 victory over Post tonight, as she hit .409 with a match-high 12 kills.

Skyhawks hit .301 with 50 kills and just 13 errors in fourth sweep of the season

EASTON, Mass. (September 26, 2014) – Stonehill College utilized a season-best .301 attack percentage to earn a 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-17) victory over Post University this evening in non-conference women's volleyball action at Merkert Gymnasium.

The Skyhawks hit over .250 in every set, including a .341 mark in the third frame, while recording 50 kills with just 13 errors en route to their fourth three-set victory of the season.

Senior middle blocker Mary-Kate Catton (San Diego, California/Academy of Our Lady of Peace) keyed the strong performance on offense, as she hit .409 with a match-high 12 kills.

Junior outside hitter Kelsey Weymouth (North Attleboro, Massachusetts/North Attleboro) posted a .350 attack percentage with ten kills, while classmate Delia Phillips (St. James, New York/Smithtown East) registered eight kills to go with seven digs.

Senior setter Emily Iverson (Elmhurst, Illinois/York) handed out a match-best 36 assists, and also contributed with eight digs and three kills. On the defensive end, sophomore Taylor Stevens (Foster, Rhode Island/Ponaganset) and freshman Claire Manuszak (Indianapolis, Indiana/Bishop Chatard) recorded ten and nine digs, respectively, while Manuszak also led all players with four service aces.

Sophomore Taylor Stevens recorded a team-best 10 digs tonight.

Post sophomore middle hitter Skyler German (Kansas City, Missouri/Park Hill South) was the bright spot for the Eagles offensively, as she hit .304 with eight kills. Collectively, Post hit just .078 with 20 kills and 12 errors in the match.  

Eagles senior setter Julia Slyaktina (Moscow, Russia/School #739) recorded 16 assists and five digs, while junior libero Janiellee Alvarez (Norwich, Connecticut/Norwich Technical) finished with a match-best 14 digs.

With the first set tied at five, Stonehill took control early by winning six of the next seven points to go up 11-6. The Eagles were never able to recover, as the Skyhawks built their lead to eight, at 18-10, before eventually winning the set by nine points.

The second frame started much like the first, with Stonehill going on a run to take control following an early 5-5 tie. The Skyhawks maintained their lead, and won eight straight points late in the set to extend their lead from five, at 16-11, to 12, at 23-11. Post won two straight points before an attack error ended the frame.

Stonehill got off to a strong start in the third set, led by two kills from Weymouth and one from Catton. Leading 4-3, the Skyhawks went on another long run, this time a six point streak, to take a commanding 10-3 advantage.  The two teams traded points for much of the set, until Stonehill extended its lead to nine (20-11) with a four-point run. Post continued to fight, winning six of the next ten points, but Catton ended the set and the match with an emphatic kill to give the Skyhawks their first home victory of the season.

Stonehill (9-3, 2-0 Northeast-10) will be right back in action tomorrow afternoon with the second of five straight matches at home, as the Skyhawks are set to host Saint Michael's College in an NE-10 contest at 2 p.m. Post (5-6, 1-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference) is also in action tomorrow, as the Eagles will return home to host Chestnut Hill College at noon in a CACC match.
