Stonehill Bounces Back With 3-1 Win At Bentley


Senior middle blocker Meaghan Lee hit .478 with 13 kills and four blocks in Stonehill's 3-1 win at Bentley tonight.

Skyhawks win three straight sets after dropping opening frame

WALTHAM, Mass. (September 23, 2014) – Senior middle blocker Meaghan Lee (Hanover, Massachusetts/Notre Dame Academy) hit a match-high .478 with 13 kills and four blocks to lead Stonehill College to a 3-1 (16-25, 25-13, 25-19, 25-17) victory at Bentley University this evening in Northeast-10 Conference volleyball action at the Dana Center.

Junior outside hitter Kelsey Weymouth (North Attleboro, Massachusetts/North Attleboro) posted a strong all-around effort as well, as she finished with a match-high tying 15 digs to go with 12 kills, two service aces, and two blocks.

Senior setter Emily Iverson (Elmhurst, Illinois/York) led all players with 39 assists, and she also chipped in with nine digs and two blocks, while senior middle blocker Mary-Kate Catton (San Diego, California/Academy of Our Lady of Peace) hit .231 with ten kills and three assists.


Junior Kelsey Weymouth posted a match-high 15 digs along with 12 kills, two aces, and two blocks tonight.

Bentley took the opening frame, 25-16, as the Skyhawks hit -.024 as a team with ten errors, compared to the home team's .222 mark with just three errors.

Stonehill bounced back in the second set, however, winning ten of the last 11 points to even the match at 1-1. The Skyhawks got off to a fast start in the third frame, with the help of a pair of kills from Lee, before building a 10-3 lead. Bentley got as close as five, at 22-17 and then 24-19, but a kill by junior outside hitter Delia Phillips (St. James, New York/Smithtown East) ended the set to give Stonehill a 2-1 lead.

The Skyhawks again got off to a strong start in the fourth set, leading 4-0 thanks to three early kills by Lee. The Falcons fought back, however, winning seven of the next eight points to take a 7-5 advantage. Stonehill regained control of the frame, winning five straight points following a 10-10 tie to go up 15-10. Stonehill never allowed Bentley to get closer than three after that, winning five of the final six points, capped by a service ace from freshman Claire Manuszak (Indianapolis, Indiana/Bishop Chatard).

Seniors Tatiana Froehlich (Newton, Massachusetts/Newton North) and Kaleigh Sullivan (Naples, Florida/Harley School) led the Bentley offense with seven kills each, while classmate Lauren Colasanti (Northville, Michigan/Northville) paced the defense with 15 digs.

Stonehill (8-3, 2-0 NE-10) is back in action this weekend, as the Skyhawks are set to host their first two matches of the season at Merkert Gymnasium. Stonehill will take on Post University Friday at 5 p.m., before returning to conference play against Saint Michael's College Saturday at 2 p.m. Bentley (6-6, 1-1 NE-10) is back in action on Friday night at Franklin Pierce University.
