Stonehill Drops Two Matches In West Palm Beach

Skyhawks fall to Palm Beach Atlantic in three sets, Georgia Regents in four

Senior captain Kirsten Arvidson hit .350 with eight kills and two blocks against Palm Beach Atlantic today.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (October 11, 2013) – The Stonehill College volleyball team opened up day one of the Palm Beach Atlantic Pepsi Bash at the Beach tournament with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 30-28) defeat at the hands of host school Palm Beach Atlantic University today at Rubin Arena.

Senior captain Kirsten Arvidson (Andover, Mass./Andover) hit .350 with eight kills and two blocks, while sophomore Delia Phillips (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown East) just missed her eighth double-double of the season with nine kills and 10 digs in Stonehill's three-set loss. Junior Meaghan Lee (Hanover, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) added six kills and four blocks for the Skyhawks.

Palm Beach Atlantic, which entered this season ranked 25th in the AVCA Division II Coaches Poll, and is currently receiving votes in the same poll, hit .256 in the match, including .333 in the second set. The Sailfish were led offensively by senior Christina Alessi (West Palm Beach, Fla./The King's Academy) and sophomore Faith Rohn (Cedar Lake, Ind.), who each recorded a match-high 12 kills. Alessi also added four blocks and two digs, while Rohn contributed nine digs. Junior setter Becca Acevedo (Miami, Fla./Westminster Christian) dished out 45 assists, and junior libero Melissa Buckingham (Southlake, Texas) led all players with 20 digs.

In its second match of the day, Stonehill fell to Georgia Regents University by a 3-1 (25-23, 25-15, 22-25, 25-16) margin. Stonehill sophomore Kelsey Weymouth (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) registered a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs to go with four blocks and two aces, and freshman setter Taylor Stevens (Foster, R.I./Ponaganset) tallied 35 assists and 11 digs.

Georgia Regents was led by juniors Kristen Koch (Niceville, Fla./Niceville), who totaled 17 kills, 15 digs, and three blocks, and Paige Tuttle (Tampa, Fla./H.B. Plant), who had nine kills and seven blocks for the Jaguars.

Stonehill (11-7, 4-1 NE-10) returns to action tomorrow with one more match in West Palm Beach, as the Skyhawks take on Georgia College at noon. Stonehill is then off until next Friday, when the Skyhawks host the first of two matches on Alumni & Family Weekend. Stonehill will welcome Franklin Pierce University to Merkert Gym on Friday, October 18th, and LIU Post on Saturday afternoon. Palm Beach Atlantic (13-3) and Georgia Regents (4-14, 0-9 Peach Belt) will face off tomorrow at 2 p.m.
