Stonehill Sweeps Host Southern New Hampshire, 3-0

Skyhawks have won nine consecutive sets in Northeast-10 play

MANCHESTER, N.H. (October 8, 2013) – The Stonehill College volleyball team earned an impressive victory on the road tonight, sweeping host Southern New Hampshire University by scores of 25-15, 25-18, and 25-21 in Northeast-10 competition at SNHU Fieldhouse.

Freshman setter Taylor Stevens (Foster, R.I./Ponaganset) hit a match-high .600, while also filling the stat sheet with 26 assists, 11 digs, five aces, three blocks, and three kills, to lead Stonehill to a dominant win. Sophomore Delia Phillips (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown East) posted a double-double with match-bests in both kills (11) and digs (16), and junior Mary-Kate Catton (San Diego, Calif./Academy of Our Lady of Peace) contributed five kills and a match-high five blocks while hitting .364. Seniors Jessica Frankowski (Unionville, Conn./Farmington) and Sydney Maxey (Hutto, Texas/Hutto) each tallied twelve digs to pace Stonehill defensively.


Freshman setter Taylor Stevens did just about everything tonight, hitting .600 with 26 assists, 11 digs, five aces, three blocks, and three kills.

Southern New Hampshire, which came into tonight's contest having won all three of its NE-10 matches, hit only .076 as a team, while Stonehill was just above the .200 mark, checking in at .202 for the match. The Penmen were led by sophomore Emma Houlihan (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River), who led the home team with nine kills and a .389 hitting percentage. No other Southern New Hampshire player hit above .125 in the match. Senior Ashlee Daoust (Brookline, N.H./Hollis-Brookline) added 14 digs and five kills for the Penmen.

Stonehill trailed 1-0 in the first set, before claiming seven of the next eight points and eventually winning the frame by double digits. With the score tied at 16 in the second set, the Skyhawks took command by winning eight points in a row on their way to a 2-0 set lead. In the final frame, Stonehill fell behind early, trailing 8-7, but won four consecutive points to take an 11-8 advantage. The Skyhawks never looked back, earning their sixth sweep of the season.

Stonehill (11-5, 4-1 NE-10), which has now won seven of its last eight matches, heads out on the road this Friday for the PBA Pepsi Bash at the Beach, a three-match tournament in West Palm Beach, Fla., hosted by Palm Beach Atlantic University. The Skyhawks will take on Palm Beach Atlantic and Georgia Regents University on Friday, and Georgia College on Saturday before returning to Easton. Stonehill is scheduled to host two matches on Alumni & Family Weekend, starting with a contest against Franklin Pierce University on Friday, October 18th. Southern New Hampshire (8-6, 3-1 NE-10) returns to action this Saturday with a 1 p.m. match at Merrimack College.
